Recently, with increasing interested in improvement of operational reliability and the systematic maintenance activities, the RCM analysis has been applied and tried to lots of applicable industries. This study covers applying the probability of failure cause to FMEA, and proposes an analytical method for this. Also, the measures of quantitative classification for the result of failure cause probability are addressed. Based on the field data, this thesis presents an identification for causes and characteristics of failure, and reviews them periodically from the above methodologies. As using FMEA applied the probability of failure cause, we in the future can look forward to improvement of efficiency for failure diagnosis & inspection, and reliability.

In the current railway industry in Korea, a lot of researches and studies have been progressed to establish RAMS process and construction of RCM system in accordance with international standards. On the point of view of applying the RCM to the railway system, many problems (i.e., reliability of the existing field data, the lack and incorrectness of failure information, etc) are described. To solve these problems, it is need to study and effort the RCM, practically. In this paper, lots of problems and solutions for methods determining the preventive maintenance interval of application of the RCM will be described. To do this, the method using the theory of RBI (Reliability Based Inspection) which is applied to the existing chemical plants and power plants is described. From this study, it is expected that in this situation that the quantitative data is not enough, the results that an analyst quantifies the qualitative factors and/or items will be a good reference that can effectively approach, on the side of determination about each maintenance task and inspection interval.

In this paper, the study on development of an applicable logic on the characteristics of Rolling stocks will be proposed. In general, this logic which means decision logic or LTA(Logic Tree Analysis) is used to analyze how the failure mode have an effects on the system. The effect would be categorized as safety, operational, economical, etc. To do this, based on the typical logics which have been applied to other industries, such as plants, aero, etc. This paper emphasizes two crucial parameters that is one cost the other customer service, that have an important role in railway system operation. In conclusion, as mentioned above as the logic for which could be effectively applied for the railway system(RST) would be developed.

The importance of reliability and safety, recently, shows a tendency to increases in railway system constructions and projects. At the point of view of safety, especially, the railway authority proposes an establishment of the safety case that is the documented demonstration that products comply with the specific safety requirements in railway industry. In case of reliability activities, there is no systematic documented demonstration in the railway industry. At this circumstance, this study presents the establishment of Reliability, Availability and Maintainability Case for railway system based on the MoD(Ministry of Defence) 00-42. This RAM Case will support that systems and products produced from suppliers or manufacturers meet the specific RAM requirements during the system life cycle(i.e, from design to operation & maintenance) through systematic process and evidences. Also, it is expected that railway system operations will be managed and supported from reliability activities in accordance with RAM Case.

Most operational organization and railway authority which conduct scheduled maintenance(SM) have carried out the preventive maintenance(PM) based on the information provided from supplier and manufacturer of railway system. However these activities are far away from reality and low the efficiency, it is because an appropriate methods for system selection didn"t take into account for improving maintenance efficiency. Therefore, the current SM tasks and maintenance activities lead to lots of spend on the cost and time. To solve the above problem, this thesis presents new approach methodology. This proposes the criteria for reliability centered maintenance(RCM) system selection through level of quantification of each parameter, i.e, frequency, severity and maintenance cost, etc. To do this, the field operation data and information of maintenance cost are essential. As applying this methodology, we can look forward to improving efficiency of PM/SM, and reducing cost.

In present, RCM has been hot issue in the domestic railway industry areas. Based on this circumstance, in this paper, for the purpose of an effective RCM system construction, a suitable organization structures which are to be applied to the railway system is proposed. Some examples and descriptions about the responsibilities and the roles which should be done by each RCM team, during the RCM analysis, as step by step for RCM analysis are also described. By using the formalized organization, the tasks for maintenance are allocated to each staff and the data for RCM analysis could be managed, systematically, as well. To sum up, it would be expected that based on the systematic organization structure for RCM analysis, the results of RCM analysis, that mean the maintenance methods and intervals for preventive maintenance, on specific railway system could be more reliable and accurate.

In this paper the RMS (Rolling-stock Management System) that applies the concept of RAM (Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability) and RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) to Preventive and Corrective Maintenance Policy for rolling stocks will be discussed. We will briefly introduce the RCM concepts and discuss how these concepts and procedures are implemented in the RMS system. In the RMS system there are three modules, System Information Module, RAM Information Module, and RCM Analysis Module. The algorithms to calculate the reliability and failure rate for Weibull distribution and formulae to calculate the task intervals and task costs were proposed in the RAM and RCM Analysis Module respectively. The RMS was tested for one of the rolling stocks of SMRT. The main issue during this test process was the importance of collecting useful part information and failure history data. We found that there is a good possibility of applying RCM to other rolling stock maintenance management systems if maintenance personnel recognizes the importance of what RCM can brings to them.
