경상지역은 『세종실록지리지』에 기록된 전국 139개의 자기소(磁器所) 가운데 단 4군데뿐인 상품자기소(上品磁器所) 중 3개소가 있었고, 분청사기 표기지명 대부분이 경상지역의 것으로 나타나는 등 분청사기 연구에 있어 매우 높은 가치와 비중을 가지고 있는 지역이다. 또 일반적으로 조선 전기 공납자기 생산 가마터 연구에 가장 널리 활용되는 『세종실록지리지』(1454) 외에 『경상도지리지』(1425), 『경상도속찬지리지』(1469) 등 전후 시기의 지지자료가 남아있어 타 지역에 비해 15세기 자기공납의 흐름 파악이 용이한 곳이 바로 경상지역이라 할 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라 조선 전기 대일 개항장으로서의 삼포가 모두 경상도지역에 있었고, 삼포왜관과 서울 동평관을 오가던 倭使의 상경로도 경상도 전역에 걸쳐 있었으며, 일본 무역품 창고 및 중개무역 장소에 해당되는 왜물고도 경상도 화원현에 있는 등 다양한 루트로 왜인들과의 접촉이 매우 잦았던 곳이 바로 경상도지역이었으므로, 다완을 비롯한 물자교류 또한 매우 활발하였던 것으로 추정된다. 본고에서는 이러한 점에 초점을 맞추어 경상지역 분청사기 가마터의 성격을 규명하고자 하였는데, 이에 앞서 일제강점기부터 지금까지 발굴조사는 물론 지표조사를 통해 확인된 유적들도 모두 망라한 경상도지역 전체의 분청사기 가마터 목록을 작성하고, 지명고찰을 통해 각 가마터가 조선 전기 소속된 군현을 명확히 밝혀내었다. 발굴조사가 실시된 12개 지역 19개 가마터를 비롯한 지역별 주요 가마터에 대한 내용을 차례로 살펴본 다음, 조선 초의 각종 지지자료 및 채집품의 제작시기, 명문, 읍치를 중심으로 한 방위 등을 종합적으로 고찰하여 각 시기별 공납자기 생산지 추정을 시도해 보았다. 또 경상도지역의 분청사기 가마터의 성격을 공납자기 생산 가마터, 대일교역자기 생산 가마터, 민수용자기 생산 가마터라는 세 가지 종류로 나누어 살펴보고, 주요 가마터의 운영시기를 도표로 만들어 비교하였다. Gyeongsang-do Province was home to three of the four kilns producing the finest ceramics among the 139 kilns nationwide manufacturing porcelain and buncheong ware recorded in the Sejong sillok jiriji(世宗實錄地理志, Geography Section of the Annals of King Sejong). Moreover, most surviving buncheong ware bears an inscription indicating that it was created in the Gyeongsang-do region. Clearly, this area is a key location for studying such ware. The fifteenth-century ceramics tribute system in Gyeongsang-do is more easily traceable compared to that in other provinces due to the multiple available sources, including Sejong sillok jiriji(1454) which is widely used to study kiln sites producing ceramics as tribute during the early Joseon period, Gyeongsang-do jiriji(慶尙道地理志, Geography of Gyeongsang-do Province)(1425), and Gyeongsang-do sokchan jiriji(慶尙道續撰地理志, Revised Geography of Gyeongsang-do Province)(1469). Furthermore, frequent contacts with Japanese people took place via various routes throughout Gyeongsang-do Province. All three ports open to Japan in the early Joseon period were situated in the province. Japanese envoys used routes that passed through the entire length of the region when they traveled from the Japanese quarters at the three ports to Dongpyeonggwan (Hall of Eastern Peace), the accommodations for Japanese envoys, in Seoul. Furthermore, the warehouse where Japanese trade goods were stored and bartered was located in Hwawon-hyeon in Gyeongsang-do. Accordingly, products, including tea bowls, are presumed to have been actively exchanged. This paper lists the kiln sites producing buncheong ware in Gyeongsang-do Province by examining relics identified through excavation surveys and ground surveys conducted since the period of Japanese colonial rule. The county and prefecture in which each kiln was situated is identified by studying place names. By doing so, this paper attempts to characterize buncheong kiln sites in Gyeongsang-do. In this paper, I speculate about the areas producing ceramics as tribute in respective periods by investigating major kiln sites, including nineteen sites in twelve regions where excavation surveys have been conducted. Diverse documentation from the early Joseon period, production dates and inscriptions of found relics, and the directions in which the kilns were located relative to the centers of counties are also examined for this purpose. Moreover, this paper scrutinizes buncheong kilns in Gyeongsang-do Province by classifying them into those producing goods for tribute, those producing goods for trade with Japan, and those producing goods for private use, as well as by diagrammatizing and comparing the operating periods of major kilns.
