본 연구는 유아가 참여하는 과외 활동 현황을 알아보고 부모의 배경 변인에 따라 과외활동 참여 현황은 어떠한지, 유아가 참여하는 과외 정도와 스트레스의 관계는 어떠한지 알아보고자 하였다. 연구의 대상은 D시에 소재한 한 유치원의 만 5세 유아의 부모 139명과 유아 30명이었다. 대부분의 유아가 유치원과 가정에서 과외 활동에 참여하고 있었으며, 3가지의 과외 활동에 참여하고 있는 유아가 가장 많았다. 과외 형태로는 학습지를 가장 많이 이용하고 있었으며, 대부분의 부모는 과외가 도움이 된다고 생각했다. 부모들은 언어영역 분야의 과외활동을 선호하였고, 과외 활동 정도에 따른 상하위 집단에 따라 과외활동의 충족도가 달랐다. 초대졸 이상인 경우와 아버지보다는 어머니인 경우에 언어영역을 더 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 부모의 월평균 소득에 따라 과외활동의 충족도가 다르게 나타났다. 전체적으로 과외활동을 6개 이상 하고 있는 상위집단의 유아가 1가지 이하 하고 있는 하위집단 유아보다 스트레스를 많이 받는 것으로 나타났다. The purpose of this study is to examine the current status of extracurricular activities among young children, and investigate the relationship between child stress and extracurricular activities. The following research questions have been established for this purpose. 1. What is the current status of extracurricular activities in which young children participate? 2. How do those activities relate to their parents' background? 3. How is the level of those activities related to the level of child stress? This study was conducted with thirty 5-year-old children and 139 parents from a private kindergarten in Daejon. The children were divided into two groups based on levels of extracurricular activities: 15 children representing the upper 20 percent of children involved in many extracurricular activities were placed in group 1, and 15 children representing the lower 20% who are involved in one or zero extracurricular activity were placed in group 2. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, most children are involved in extracurricular activities, and most children participate in three kinds of activities. The most common type of activity is home study using drill books. Second, the area of extracurricular activities that are most preferred and received the highest expectation are in the verbal area. Third, there were differences in degree of fulfillment between the upper and lower groups. Differences in fulfillment levels are directly proportioned to observed differences in the child's level of stress. The children in the upper group with more than six kinds of extracurricular activities get more stressed than those in the lower group with one or no such activity.
