An experimental study on spreading flame over electrical wire, which was insulated by Polyethylene(PE) and had different diameters, was conducted with applied AC electric field. The result showed that the flame spread rate decreased in increase of the diameter of insulator at a fixed electric field. The flame spread rate exhibited increase or decrease tendency with applied AC electric field, having three distinct regimes depending on applied voltage and frequency. In each regime, the flame spread rate was characterized by physical parameters of applied electric fields and wire dimensions, and the behaviors could be explained by a thermal balance mechanism.

The effect of a direct current (DC) electric field on the characteristics of flame spread over polyethylene (PE) -insulated twin electrical wires was studied by varying wire gap (S) and voltage (VDC). The flame spread rate (FSR) for the wire with negative voltage (SF-) was larger than with positive voltage (SF+) initially and becomes the same in developed region. The FSR could be classified into two regimes; twin flame spread and single flame spread after the extinction of positive voltage (SF+). In each regime, three sub-regimes are identified depending on S and VDC. In each regime, FSR could be characterized by S and VDC The variation of FSR was explained by thermal balance mechanism with ionic wind effect. In high intensive of voltage, the flames were extinguished, at excessive voltages, an electrical short occurred.

An Experimental study on effect of AC electric fields on flame spread over electrical wire with a copper (Cu) metal insulated by Polyethylene (PE) was conducted with applying AC electric fields in a single-electrode configuration. The size, inclination, and shape o f s pr eading f lame as well as the dynamic behavior of molten PE were influenced appreciably by ionic wind effect when AC electric field is applied to wire, there by modifying FSR.
