Remained in the district of Young Deung Po that used to be on the outskirts of Seoul during the period of industrialization, a so called‘industrial heritages’ are currently converted to be new centers containing art and cultural contents. Departed from a criticism on such previous methods of restoration, the study attempts to view the modernistic tensions between landscape and machines in different way and to resist hubris of the object in modernists’mind. The thesis intends to make the garden-machine relationship conflict to each other, and finally to convert the existing mill plant remaining in the area to a urban park in order to create a social platform for those residents and visitors.

The study, focusing on the local governments" mixed moves of urban development and restoration in the post industrial society, departs from critical reconsideration on the current uniformed trend in recycling the industrial heritages. The study attempts to explore the contemporary concept of sublime beauty and its applicability for architecture through a historical survey, to analyze cases of urban restoration in which the property of the industrial heritage well corresponds with the regional characteristics, and to examine an conceptual applicability of sublime beauty in modern city to develop a psycho-cultural cityscape. The thesis eventually purposes to develop a new strategy for recycling the abandoned industrial area to enhance the aesthetic value of the cityscape.

The new concept of Space that was created by the science-technological advancement and ideological changes since the 20th century, caused the cognition change about the wall. It means that, as the wall possessed autonomy and independence, the wall has turned from a mere function confining the space to be a device generating meanings. Having not only the various functions but also the expressive traitm the space is to be composed instead of being distributed. This study therefore examines the role of space composition by the wall with regard to mutual binding of the space and generation of meaning, analyzes the works of prominent modern architects, and verifies the fact that the wall became the subject to generate complex meaning through binding the spaces.
