당뇨병성 근위축증(diabetic amyotrophy)은 동통성 비대칭성 또는 대칭성 다발신경병증의 일종으로 발생율은 당뇨환자의 1% 정도이며 50세 이상의 경한 당뇨병 환자에서 발생하고, 대퇴부위의 통증과 함께 시작되어 근력의 약화와 근육위축을 야기할 수 있다. 진단기준은 신경학적 증상이 시작되거나 이전에 진단된 당뇨병과 갑자기 시작된 하지 동통, 한쪽 또는 양쪽의 하지 근육의 근력약화, 근전도상 근육질환 배제와 종양 혹은 다발성 척추 협착증의 배제 등을 포함한다. 당뇨병성 근위축증은 감각 신경에 의한 증상은 없는 것이 특징이며, 병리기전 및 임상 양상에 따라 비대칭적이거나 빠른 진행을 보이는 혈관성 또는 체중 감소가 선행되거나 대칭으로 서서히 진행하는 대사성의 두 가지 분류로 나눌 수 있다. 신경전도검사, 근전도검사 및 자율신경검사를 시행할 수 있으며 다른 다발성말초신경병증과의 감별이 필요할 경우에 한하여 말초신경생검을 시행할 수 있다. 예후는 당뇨 조절을 잘 하면 자연적으로 호전된다고 하나 그 기전에 대해서는 뚜렷이 밝혀지지는 않았다. Diabetic amyotrophy in the elderly is considered as a distinctive form of diabetic neuropathy. It is characterized by weakness of proximal muscles either unilaterally or bilaterally, and is associated with pain. It is usually seen in patients with poorly controlled or previously unrecognized diabetes mellitus, and weight loss is a common concomitant. We report a case of an elderly patient with recently uncontrolled diabetes mellitus who has diabetic amyotrophy. A 65-year-old woman diagnosed with diabetes mellitus 5 years ago, was admitted with weight loss, mild pain, and weakness in both calfs, causing difficulty in walking and abrupt gait disturbance and consequently repeated falls.

The thickness and chemical composition of oxides on heat recovery steam generator tubes of combined cycle power plant were examined in order to evaluate the corrosion of the tubes. Tubes were removed from the plant after actual operations for 21,482, 42,552 and 56,123 hours respectively. Thickness and growth rate of the oxide scale on reheater inner tube (SA213-T22) were very high compared to those other tubes. The oxide scale was about 250 ㎛ thick and uniform. The components of the scale were iron oxides. The oxide scale was mixed oxides consisting of magnetite(Fe3O4) and hematite(Fe2O3). The oxide on inner tube was removed using many kinds of chemicals and it was found that chelating agents were dissolved faster than other chemicals.

Most of the thirteen substations in operation in the metropolitan area were installed around the year 2000, and since water cooling methods are used to directly withdraw heat from transformer oils, a stable supply of electric power is required through optimal maintenance of facilities. The water cooling tower installed outdoors, which uses the water supply as sprinkler water, experiences the most problems. Since more than 90% of the cooling water is reused, the dissolved composition in the water becomes concentrated due to long operating hours, and impurities dissolve in the water due to air flowing in from the outside, forming hard scales on the outer surface of the cooling tube, and in extreme cases, reacting with the tube material composition, leading to corrosion. As a result, not only is cooling efficiency lowered, but in extreme cases the cooling tube must be replaced. In this study, the characteristics and composition of the scales formed on the cooling tube were analyzed and corrosion characteristics of material types were identified in order to find an efficient maintenance method for cooling rubes. In addition, the degree of dissolution of various chemicals were investigated during the removal of scales that have been formed.
