Francis turbine is one of the highly efficient turbines which converts hydraulic energy to mechanical energy. At lower flow rate operating conditions, the turbines stable operation is affected due to the downstream swirl instabilities. Cavitation is also a very common and severe problem in these turbines due to which turbine components may fail because of erosion and pressure fluctuations. In the turbine, the suction head affects the cavitations inception and development. A numerical investigation of the effect of suction head on cavitation at part load condition is attempted in the present study using CFX code. The suction head is evaluated based on creating different suction pressure at the draft tube outlet. The steady-state numerical calculations are performed with a structured and unstructured grid. For the acceptance of generated grid, the grid convergence index is also calculated. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are solved accompanying the Rayleigh-Plesset model to capture the turbulent flow with cavitation. An experiment is also performed for the verification of the numerical results. As the suction head increases, the cavitation is initiated and developed and both the efficiency and power decreases. The head loss in the draft tube is maximum for fully developed cavitation with 2% deviation from without cavitation case for which the loss is minimum. The vortex rope strength for the higher values of suction heads is higher compared to lower values of suction heads. Similarly, the swirl intensity is also higher for higher suction heads. The deciding parameter of the suction head can be predicted for the stable operation of the turbine using the current investigation.

Francis turbine is efficient at converting hydraulic to mechanical energy, but it faces stability issues and cavitation problems at different outlet pressures. Thoma number ( ) influences cavitation even at rated conditions, leading to erosion and pressure fluctuations, which can cause turbine component failures. In the current study, a 170-class Francis turbine that was operating at rated condition underwent a detailed examination to evaluate its performance and flow behaviour under various Thoma numbers. For accurate flow physics description, we employed the Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation. The two-phase model was used to simulate cavitation, and the Grid Convergence Index was used to guarantee grid accuracy. Our numerical approach dependability was proven by comparison with experimental data. For both (0.1211 and 0.3633), constant hydraulic performance with no appreciable variations was observed. In the vaneless area, abnormal pressure patterns were visible, including the initial blade passing frequency. Except for pressure fluctuations brought on by variations in output pressure, flow properties like meridional velocity and flow angle remained constant in the runner region regardless of . Within the draft tube, the axial and circumferential velocities were identical. Thoma numbers changed the maximum pressure pulsation magnitude, but no discernible differences were seen. In conclusion, the turbine showed no noticeable effects at rated operation with varying Thoma numbers under cavitation-prone situations. Further off-design investigations can be conducted based on the present methodology and compared accurately with the rated condition results.

In this study, a high-efficiency Francis turbine was designed using a database-driven approach for the runner thickness of a prototype Francis turbine with a specific speed in the 170-class. Numerical analysis was carried out to investigate the hydraulic performance and internal flow characteristics of the turbine. The runner blade thickness database was constructed by normalizing data from models with specific speeds of 150, 210, and 270-classes. The thickness distribution data was obtained through interpolation and encompasses information from the runner inlet to the outlet at the hub, mid, and shroud spans. Subsequently, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations were employed in numerical simulations to accurately analyze the hydraulic performance and characteristics of the internal flow field of the Francis turbine. The Grid Convergence Index (GCI) method, utilized as a grid independence test, was used to select the optimal grid system, ensuring both the accuracy and cost effectiveness of the numerical analysis. The numerical results confirmed the feasibility of designing a Francis turbine operating at an efficiency of 93.63% and an output of 30.71MW. The internal flow analysis revealed that the runner exhibited a uniform velocity component across all span regions, without any observed unstable flow characteristics, such as flow separation at the runner inlet and outlet areas. Additionally, there was no blockage effect disrupting the flow within the runner, and uniform flow characteristics were confirmed throughout all spans. The analysis of the flow field in the draft tube downstream of the runner indicated a stable flow distribution and pressure profiles, thereby establishing the reliability of the database-driven approach for designing the runner thickness of the Francis turbine with a specific speed in the 170-class, as utilized in this study. The findings of this research can be applied in the future design of turbines across different specific speed ranges.
