In a scroll compressor it is generally accepted that a check valve is necessary to prevent reverse rotation of the scrolls. The check valve is subjected to discharge pulsations and their resultant forces. The flow phenomena around the check valve may affect the efficiency and the noise level significantly. The motivation of this study is to understand the flow phenomena and the unstable motion of the check valve on operating conditions in order to identify reasons raising noise and improve the performance of the check valve. In this study, unsteady flow simulation was performed using CFD and the pressure distribution around the check valve was obtained. This paper also shows that unstable motion of the check valve on standard operating conditions through theoretical analysis and flow visualization.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of design parameters on the volume flow-rate and the noise level and to finally find the optimal design variables. Eighteen cross-flow fans were designed by the method of orthogonal array, and the flow-rate and the noise level were measured. These data were analyzed by the neural network system. The effects of eight design variables(scroll exit angle, scroll arc length et al.) on the fan performance and the noise level were valuated and discussed. This experiment shows that the design solutions suggested by neural network system may increase its volume flow-rate and reduce noise simultaneously.

A new method to calculate the aeroacoustic pressure of a centrifugal fan was developed. The fan consists of an impeller, diffuser and circular casing. Due to the high rotating velocity and the small gap between the impeller and diffuser, the centrifugal fan makes very high noise level at BPF and its harmonic frequencies. The aeroacoustic pressure is calculated acoustic analogy. In this paper, only dipole term is considered in the equation. The acoustics generated by moving impeller and stationary diffuser is calculated separately. The unsteady flow field data is calculated by the vortex method. The predicted acoustic pressure agrees very well to the measured data. The difference of the two is smaller than 3㏈A.

Over the range(OTR) has been applied for cooking and ventilation functions especially in northern America. Because flow rate and operating rpm of the double sided sirocco fan for ventilation are much higher and than the microwave oven system, the major noise source is the sirocco fan. Recently, the quiet fan development is one of very important issues for amenity. In this study, the noise source identification using multi-microphone array system was carefully carried out and numerical simulations for understanding the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic of the fan were performed. The sound level of tonal noise is predicted with a good accuracy but that of the broadband shows some discrepancy. In order to reduce the broadband noise, the inlet region of sirocco fan have to be modified that the secondary flow should be suppressed. Based on these results, new low noise fan and OTR is now developing.
