이 연구에서는 외국인 대학생을 위한 글쓰기 교재에 제시된 요약하기 교육 방법을 살펴보고, 문제점을 분석하고 개선 방향을 제안하였다. 이를 위해 고려대학교, 서울대학교, 성균관대학교, 한양대학교, 경희대학교 글쓰기 교재를 분석하였다. 대부분의 대학에서 글쓰기는 교양 필수 과목이고 학문 활동을 하는데 매우 중요한 과목이다. 보고서를 쓰거나 시험 답안을 작성하는 등 학업에 필요하며, 그러한 일들을 잘 해내기 위해서는 전공 서적이나 학술 논문을 읽고 요약하는 기술이 필요하다. 요약하기는 단순히 쓰기에만 필요한 능력이 아니라 읽기와 듣기에도 필수적이며 외국인 대학생들에게 실질적인 학업 기술이라는 점에서 매우 중요하다. 일부 대학에서는 글쓰기 수업에서 내국인과 외국인을 구분하지 않고 있으며 교재 또한 분리하지 않고 사용한다. 내국인과 외국인을 구분하여 수업하는 대학의 글쓰기 교재는 요약하기에 관한 언급이 아예 없거나 혹은 적은 부분을 할애하고 있었다. 교재에 제시된 요약하기 방법, 절차에 대한 설명과 연습이 부족하며 제시문 또한 학생들의 수준보다 어려움을 확인할 수 있었다. 대학교에 입학한 외국인 신입생들은 한국어능력이 중급 정도의 수준임에도 불구하고, 교재에 이와 같은 학습자 특성이 반영되지 않은 것이다. 이 때문에 학생들이 제시문을 이해하는 데 어려움을 겪을 수 있다. 요약하기 능력을 습득하지 못한 외국인 대학생들은 과제나 시험에서 수준 차이를 느끼게 되고 학습에 어려움을 겪을 수 있다. 또한, 교수자나 내국인 대학생들과 원활한 의사소통과 협력학습을 위해서도 글쓰기 능력이 필요하므로 글쓰기의 기초인 요약하기 교육이 매우 중요한 것이다. 외국인 대학생들이 만족스러운 학문 활동을 하기 위해서는 요약하기 능력을 습득하는 것이 꼭 필요하다. 이 연구에서 분석한 문제점과 개선 방향이 차후 글쓰기 교재 개편에 반영되면 유용할 것으로 생각되며, 긍정적으로 검토되기를 기대한다. This research examined the teaching method for summarizing at The Writing Class"s Textbook for foreign university student, and also discussed the problems in the textbook. For this, this research analyzed five textbooks using in Korea University, Seoul University, Sungkyunkwan University, Hanyang University, and Kyunghee University. Writing is a mandatory course at the almost universities, and it is an important subject to attend the academic activities. The Writing is necessary for drafting reports and filling the test papers. Especially students need the skill to summarize textbook and academic articles. Summarizing is an essential skill for writing, reading, and listening. And It is a substantive learning skill for international students. Some universities do not classify the classes or the textbooks between domestic students and international students. In the college curriculum, which distinguishes between domestic students and international ones, there are cases even didn"t mentioned or little for summarizing skills. There is lack of description and practice for summarizing method and process proposed in textbook, and it is confirmed that texts are too difficult for students. Besides, although every international student scored the intermediate level or above in the Korean language proficiency test, the textbooks didn"t regard this feature. So, there were problems to understand or practice the textbook"s articles. Because of reckless on considering the level differences, Students couldn"t acquire summarizing skills suitably. And they appealed the difficulties in college life includes fulfilling the tasks and tests. To archive efficient communication and collaborative learning, Writing is competence for The international students. The summarizing are elemental learning contents in the writing classes. The Summarizing education is inevitable for international students to get interested in college life. The results of this research would be useful to revise textbooks.
