태평양전쟁 말기 일본 군인의 제주도 주둔 경험

        다카무라료헤이 ( Takamura Ryohei ) 한국사회사학회 2006 사회와 역사 Vol.0 No.72

This paper attempts to review the experiences of the Japanese soldiers who stayed in Jejudo during the end of the Pacific War. Three former Japanese soldiers-Kobayashi, Kamiki, Nakahara-are my considerations. I did oral testimonies for Kobayashi and Kamiki, and I used Nakahara``s writings. I also used oral history and literature as the documents which recorded the experiences of the individual in this paper. Among their experiences, I am especially concerned about how three experiences-military equipment and tendency of them, the relationship between them and Koreans, the end of a war differently appeared to them. It is said the soldiers of the unit which Kobayashi belonged to were old and they were not well in training. But, the units which Kamiki and Kobayashi belonged to were in field training. Kobayashi and Kamiki said that the Korean soldiers in their units were good relationship with villagers in Jejudo, but, Nakahara wrote in his book that it was worthwhile to surveil the activities of the villagers after the end of the war. Their experiences are different each. We need to conside the variety of the experiences even under situation which demands collective behavior like war. But, this paper argues that in case of the Japanese Army, the unit of the company is important. The experience of the ordinary soldier was limited within the company, and it was the unit that recognized the personality which the company was attached the nickname. And, one thing that I want to argue is the difference between the subjects in this paper and until now, there are a lot of oral history in this field. Jejudo was not in such extreme situation because there was not actual battle during the Pacific War. Former Japanese soldiers have written a lot of their experiences let alone the common subjects for the oral history. But, since Jejudo did not become the battlefield, their experiences in Jejudo during the war were remarked in very short in Kobayashi and Nakahara``s writings. We can find that the oral history is useful to review the experiences of the individuals not only under the extreme situation or experiences but also dubious situation or position.
