고전 일러스트레이션의 비주얼 레토릭 표현에 관한 연구 - 서양의 19세기 대표 작품 사례를 중심으로 -

일러스트레이션은 시각이미지를 통해 말이나 글보다 효과적으로 의미를 전달하며 소통한다는 관점에서 ‘시각언어’라고 불리고 있다. 한편 언어학에서는 고대시대부터 말이나 글을 효과적으로 전달하기 위해 레토릭이 발전해왔다. 이에 본 연구는 현대 일러스트레이션의 모체라고 할 수 있는 19세기의 대표 작품 사례를 통해 시대적 배경에 따라 비주얼 레토릭이 어떠한 변화 양상을 보였는지 분석하고, 이를 통해 향후 다의적 발상표현 방법론의 확장 가능성을 제안하는데 목적이 있다. 비주얼 레토릭의 범위로는 일반적 분류로 크게 비유법 6종과 강조법10종으로 나누었으며 문헌연구를 통해 시대별 비주얼 레토릭 변화 추이를 분석하였다. 그 결과 19세기 전기는 낭만주의의 전성기로 공포나 초자연과 같은 주제를 직관적인 직유법을 주된 표현 기법으로 활용함을 알 수 있었다. 이후 중반기에는 사실주의의 직유적 표현을 다시 한번 거친 후 후반기에는 은유적 표현에 여러 강조법이 더해진 복합 비주얼 레토릭 기법을 다량 확인 할 수 있었다. 이는 인상주의나 상징주의와 깊은 연관이 있다. 이 과정에서 19세기의 대표 작품을 레토릭 관점에서 분석해 본 결과 세 가지의 다의적 발상표현 방법론으로서의 가치를 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 비주얼 레토릭은 당대의 여러 시대상을 반영한다. 이는 곧 일러스트레이션의 다양한 주제 표현 방식의 시도와 연결된다. 둘째, 계획적인 복합 비주얼 레토릭은 조리있는 시각언어로서의 역할을 지닌다. 셋째, 일러스트레이션과 레토릭의 융합은 차별화된 상상력 표현의 수단으로서 가치를 지닌다. 향후 비주얼 레토릭을 작품의 컨셉형성 단계에서 체계적으로 계획한다면 보다 독창적인 결과물을 탄생시킬 수 있을 것이며, 아이디어 표현의 방법 또한 무궁무진해질 것이다. Illustration is called 'visual language' in terms of communicating meaning more effectively than words or writing through visual images. On the other hand, in linguistics, rhetoric has been developed since ancient times to effectively transmit meaning. This study analyzes how visual rhetoric has changed throughout historical backgrounds by looking at the cases of representative works from the 19th century, which can be called as the origin of modern illustration. Through this analysis, this study proposes a possibility of the expansion of the methodology of expressive ideas. The range of Visual Rhetoric was divided into six categories and ten kinds of emphasis in general, and the trend of visual rhetoric by age was analyzed through literature review. As a result, we found that the early 19th century was the heyday of romanticism, and the subjects such as fear or supernatural were expressed by intuitive simile technique as the main expression technique. In the mid 19th century, once again had the direct expressions of realism. And, in the late 19th century, the compound visual ritual technique with various emphasis added to the metaphor expression was mainly used. It is deeply connected with impressionism and symbolism. In this process, the representative works of the nineteenth century are analyzed from the rhetorical point of view and the following three values can be summarized. First, visual rhetoric reflects many periods of the time. This is linked to diverse attempts of thematic expressions of illustration. Second, the planned complex visual rhetoric plays a role as a reasonable visual language. Third, the fusion of illustration and rhetoric has value as a means of expressing differentiated imagination. If we systematically consider and plan with visual rhetoric in the concept planning stage of the work, we will be able to produce even more original results and the method of how we can express our ideas may become unlimited.
