오늘날 수많은 서구 국가들에서 어떤 사회 변동이 일어나고 있다. 이 변동 속에서 부유한 계급들은 ‘신봉건적’ 특권들을 얻지만, 불안정화된 사회 집단들은 궁핍화와 배제에 직면해 있다. 이 새로운 형태의 사회구조 양극화를 설명하는 최근 연구들은 신분에 따른 사회 불평등이 공고해지면서 사회 균등과 사회 이동에 관한 근대의 모든 약속들이 무너지고 있다고 말한다. 금융시장 자본주의의 부상과 함께 분명 부, 생애 기회, 권력의 분배에 있어 어떤 전형이 만들어졌다. 이 극적인 변화를, 위르겐 하버마스의 ‘공론장의 구조변동’ 연구에서 소개된 분석적 개념과 관련지어 근대 자본주의의 ‘재봉건화’로 설명할 것이다. 재봉건화 과정에 대한 분석은 근대화가 근대 사회질서의 원칙들과 단절하면서 이루어지는 현 사회의 동학을 해명해 준다. 말하자면, 극복했다고 믿었던 전근대적 사회 형식과 서열을 다시 생성시키는 역설적 방식으로 사회가 전환되고 있는 것이다. 논지는 다음과 같은 순서로 전개될 것이다. 우선 공론장의 위기에 대한 분석과 최근 조사 결과들을 소개함으로써 애초에 공론장을 연구한 분야에서 하버마스의 ‘재봉건화’ 개념이 이론적으로 어떻게 구성되었고 어떤 점에서 시사성을 띠고 있는지 명시적으로 보여줄 것이다. 그 다음으로 현 자본주의 사회들의 수많은 발전들을 이해하고자 ‘재봉건화’를 핵심 개념으로 설명하고, 근대 사회의 역설적 변형 형태로 특징지을 것이다. 재봉건화의 주요 영역은 사회구조의 최하 계층들과 최상 계층들에서 오늘날 일어나고 있는 사회 불평등 변화다. 따라서 사회구조의 최하단에서 벌어지는 예속 노동의 궁핍화와 귀환이 최상단에서 일어나는 부유한 새로운 과두의 등장과 어떻게 부합하는지를 보여줄 것이다. 끝으로 현 자본주의의 사회분석을 위한 몇몇 사회학적 결과들을 앞서 설명된 과정들에서 종합적으로 도출할 것이다. In several western societies a social transformation is currently underway, installing “neo-feudal” privilege for the upper classes while precarious social groups experience impoverishment and exclusion. The rise of a financial-market capitalism that has substantially transformed economic, political, and social institutions has apparently also brought back social patterns of distributing wealth, income, and power typical of the pre-modern era, albeit in an updated form. Referring to an analytical concept originally introduced by Jürgen Habermas in his famous inquiry on the Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere, this article examines the current transformations of social inequality and the economic sphere as a “refeudalization” of modern capitalism. My argument will proceed as follows: In order to indicate the topicality of Habermas’ concept of refeudalization in its original field of research, I will first discuss some recent findings about a current crisis of the public sphere. Secondly, I will explain how to use “refeudalization” as an analytical term in sociology not only for an inquiry into the public sphere, but further for several societal developments in present-day capitalism. As the empirical field of my research I will introduce the transformations of social inequality today which lead to pre-modern types of social stratification at the bottom of the social structure as well as at the very top of the social hierarchy. At the end of the article some sociological conclusions will be discussed concerning the modes of social change in modern capitalism in general.
