본 연구는 운동회에 참가한 학생들이 운동회를 준비하거나, 운동회에 참가하면서 어떠한 경험을 하는지를 살펴보고 운동회의 교육적 의미를 알아보는데 목적을 두고 실시되었다. 이를 위해 ‘I’지역 ‘S’초등학교에 재학하며 운동회에 참가한 6학년 학생들을 대상으로 연구 참여자를 구성하였는데, 체육일기에 참여한 연구 참여자는 18명이었으며 소감문을 작성한 연구 참여자는 75명이었다. 자료 수집은 학생들의 체육일기 및 소감문, 개별 심층 면담 등을 중심으로 이루어졌다. 자료 분석은 Spradley(박종흡 역, 2003)의 영역분석, 분류분석, 성분분석 방 법을 사용하여 초등학교 학생들이 운동회에 참가하면서 겪는 다양한 경험과 교육적 의미를 탐색하였다. 연구결과 학생들은 운동회를 하면서 친구들과 함께하는 즐거움, 부모님과 함께 하는 행복감, 운동회에 대한 기대 등 다양한 긍정적인 경험을 하고 있었으며, 운동회 연습을 힘들어하기도 하고, 반복되는 운동회 연습 과정에서 피로감, 학생들 간의 갈등 등 부정적인 경험도 하고 있었다. 운동회의 교육적 효과는 협동심, 인내, 질서 의식, 자신감, 학생과 학부 모 교사와의 유대 관계 개선, 즐거움과 같은 긍정적인 교육적 효과가 나타나기도 하지만 승 패에 대한 부담감, 모든 학년이 참가함에 따라 배정되는 프로그램의 부족으로 인한 운동회 운영 방법에 대한 고려 등 부정적인 효과도 나타나고 있었다. This study aimed to evaluate how elementary school students would find the experiences of participating in sports day as well as the depth of the educational meaning thereof. Research subjects consisted of 6th grade students at ‘S’ elementary school located in ‘I’ city. 18 students of them participated in writing PE diaries and 75 in writing reviews. Students’ PE diaries, reviews, and in-depth interviews were used for the materials of this study. The materials were analyzed about various experiences and educational meaningfulness when students participated in the sports day with domain analysis, taxonomic analysis and componential analysis proposed by Spradley(1979). The result of this study were as follows: Students in a sports day had various positive experiences, such as expectation of a sports day, enjoyment with their friends, happiness with their family and etc. And they had diverse negative experiences, such as fatigue by hot weather and practice, etc. The positive meaningfulness of a sports day was joy, cooperation, patience, confidence, sense of public order, improvement of relationships with students, teachers and their parents. The negative meaningfulness was the burden for victory, operational problems caused by scant programs, etc.
