The discrete nature of linguistic information is reflected on the articulatory processes which convert linguistic information into speech signal. For the quantitative analysis and the objective description of characteristics of articulatory control, simultaneous observation was made of jaw, tonque and lips in the articulation of isolated Korean vowels using both X-ray and ordinary photographs. Analysis of results confirmed the discrete nature of controls along each articulatory dimension. The ternary character of jaw control was confirmed using artificial gums as aids for the accurate measurement of jaw opening angles. The position and the shape of tongue relative to mandible was quantified by approximating the tongue contour in the X-ray photograph by an ellipse, and the results indicated the ternary character of tongue control. The dependency of lip opening area on jaw opening was found to be almost linear but clearly indicated binary character of lip control, namely presence/absence of lip construction. 언어정보로부터 음성신호로의 변환을 행하는 조음의 과정은 언어정보의 이산성을 반영하는데, 이것을 정량적으로 파악하여 객관적으로 기술하는 것을 목적으로 두부의 X선 사진과 안면의 정면, 측면사진의 촬영으로 한국어 단모음의 조음에 따른 턱, 혀, 입술의 동시 관측을 행하여, 그 결과를 분석하므로서 각각 조음차원에서의 제어의 이산성을 명확히 하였다. 즉 턱의 열림각에 대해서는 그 제어가 3단계인 것을 확인하였고, 혀의 변위, 변형에 대해서는 턱을 고정한 좌표를 기준으로 혀의 윤곽의 주요부분을 근사하는 타원을 구하는 그의 위치와 기울기로부터 혀의 제어가 3단계인 것을 보였다. 또 입술에 관하여는 그 개구면적과 턱의 열림각의 관계로부터 입술의 적극적인 오므림의 유무의 2단계의 제어가 행하여 짐을 밝혔다.
