존재적, 관계적 용어로서 Mission의 본질 - 근대 이후에 파생된 현상학적 용법에 대한 재고

선교학자들은 영어 mission을 저마다 다르게 정의한다. 이러한 용어의 모호성은 16세기 이후의 용법 변화에 기인하는데, 그 이전까지 mission의 어원인 라틴어 missio는 기독교 안에서 행위가 아니라 존재 및 관계를 설명하는 용어로서 ‘하나님의 보내심’이라는 뜻으로 명료하고 일관되게 사용되었다. 하지만 16세기 유럽 교회와 국가가 해외로 확장하려는 공동 목적을 위해 결탁하는 과정에서 정치 용어 mission과 여기에 동원된 예수회의 용어 mission이 혼합되었고, 그 결과 기독교 용어 mission은 점차 관계가 아니라 행위를 설명하는 용어로 변질되었다. 1950년대 하나님의 선교 신학을 기점으로 mission을 재정의하는 과정에서 발생한 혼란의 상당 부분은 이 관계적 용법에서 행위적 용법으로의 일탈과 그에 따른 현상학적 전제에 주목하지 않은 데서 기인한다. 따라서 선교학은 조직신학의 전통, 이냐시오의 영성, 성서를 토대로 mission을 관계적이면서 교회의 실천을 규정하는 용어로 사용할 수 있도록 새로운 용법을 개발해야 하며, 이 본질적 용법을 중심으로 근대 이후에 무분별하게 남용된 용례를 정리해야 한다. Missiologists vary with different definitions of mission. This problem originated from the term’s fallacious change of usage that started in the sixteenth century. Until then mission had been a time-honored term of trinitarian dogmatics, which clearly and constantly meant God’s sending and primarily addressed ontological and relational ideas. However, as the Vatican collaborated with the Iberian monarchs and mobilzed Jesuits in pursuit of extra-European expansion, political usage of mission came to be mingled with its Jesuit usage. This resulted in the term’s radical deviation from its Christian tradition as it gained currency as a phenomenological term rather than a relational one both within and outside the church. Failure to criticize this misguided usage and consequent phenomenological assumption behind it has been the main reason for the missiological bewilderment at how to define mission since the 1950s. The missiological task today is to develop a new usage of mission so that this relational term may rightly guide Christian practices upon such authentic foundations as dogmatic discourses on mission, Ignatian spirituality of mission, and the scriptures. This new usage will function as the criterion by which imprudent modern usages should be corrected.
