지난 2010년 3월 20일과 4월 14일 아이슬란드의 에이야프얄라요쿨 화산 분화로 인해 화산재의 직ㆍ간접적인 경제적 피해가 국내까지 미치게 되었다. 이러한 상황 속에서 국내에서도 10세기 중반 화산폭발지수 VEI 7의 대규모 분화 기록을 보유하고 있는 백두산의 화산분화에 따른 피해 걱정을 하는 목소리가 높아졌다. 하지만 화산이 분화하기 전까지 그 시기나 규모를 정확하게 예측하기 어렵고 한 번 분화하면 수많은 인명피해, 경제적 피해를 야기하는 화산재해 특성상 매우 불확실한 리스크를 안고 있는 상황이다. 또한 국제적으로 화산재해 피해관련 전문 정보를 직접 제공하는 기관이 부족해 정보수집이 어려운 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 전 세계적으로 발생하는 화산분화에 따른 인명피해, 시설피해, 산업피해 관련 자료를 수집하고 현황을 파악하여 화산재해 경향 분석의 기초자료로 활용하고자 한다. The direct and indirect economic damage of the volcanic ash has been brought to Korea by the volcanic eruption in March and April of 2010 from Mt. Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland. Along with this situation, the concern about the potential damage caused by the volcanic eruption of Mt. Baekdu, which had a large-scale explosion record of VEI 7 in the mid-10th century, has increased. However, it is difficult to accurately predict the time and size until the volcano actually erupts and it is a very uncertain risk due to the characteristics of the ash that causes social and economic damages of large scale once it explodes. In addition, it is difficult to collect information and data because there are not enough organizations to provide professional information on damages caused by volcanic ash. The purpose of this study is to collect data on human injury, facility damage, and industrial damage caused by volcanic eruptions occurring worldwide, and to utilize it as a basis for analysis of volcanic disasters.
