러일 전쟁을 목전에 두고 ‘아시아연대론’이 유행하던 당시, 손병희와 동학신도들이 대일협력을 모색했던 것은 역사 속 흐름의 당연한 귀결이었다. 속내는 어찌되었든 국제적으로 조선의 독립에 적극적이었던 일본이 러시아보다는 가깝게 느껴졌을 것이며, 한국을 일본과 함께 러일전쟁의 승전국으로 만들어 국상을 드높이기 위해서 일본군을 지원했던 것이었다. 결과적으로는 우리는 혼네(本音)와 타테마에(建前)를 갖고 있는 일본에 대해 너무 알지 못했고, 그 결과 일본제국의 식민지라는 비참한 결과를 얻게 되었다. 하지만 당시의 전쟁통에서 일본과 동맹국이 되고자 일본군을 지원한 그 모든 행동들을 매국 행위라고 단정지을 수는 없다. 본 논문은 동학의 일본군 지원을 친일과 반일이라는 이분법적인 관점이 아닌, 당시의 상황을 염두에 두고 동학의 제3대 교주 손병희의 러일전쟁 전후 사상과 행적을 고찰했다. The wind of the modernization in the late Joseon dynasty also had a considerable impact on the life of Son Byeong-hee, the third leader of the Donghak religious community. In order to defend Donghak, which had been oppressed by the Korean government, he sought political asylum in Japan. His life in Japan as a political exile made him concerned about not only Donghak but also the future of his nation. Although he made various efforts to save his country around the time of the Russo-Japanese War, he could not achieve a desirable result. Then, Son Byeong-hee tried to protect the country, making use of his status in the Donghak community and it spower. He organized ‘Min hoe’ within Donghak and helped the Japanese Army to construct a railroad in the Korean Peninsula, which was supposed to play a crucialrole in the outcome of the Russo-Japanese War. His purposes were to express his support for Asian solidarity arguments and to lead his country to the victorious side in the war, maintaining a good relationship with Japan. This paper aims to reconsider Son Byeong-hee’s aspirations by means of taking a close and dispassionate look at political circumstances at that time.
