Fatigue strength database system was developed for Windows 95 on personal computer. The relational database management system Visual FoxPro 5.0 was used. The database system developed contains 3,147 S-N curves and 311 ε-N ones for 437 material symbols and has the ability to search data by material symbol that each specification marks differently. Visual Basic 5.0 was used for graphic presentation and statistical treatment of the data searched.

Fracture toughness database system was developed with Visual Foxpro 6.0 and operates in MS Windows environment. The database system contains 10,278 sets of KIC data, 7,046 sets of KC data, 784 sets of JIC data, 571 sets of CTOD data, 62 sets of Ka data and 26 sets of KId data. The data were collected from JSMS(Society of Material Science, Japan) fracture toughness data book and USAF(United States Air Force) crack growth database. In addition, the database was applied to predicting KIC from tensile material properties using artificial neural networks.

For determination of crack opening load, a modified ASTM compliance offset method called the normalized ASTM offset method is proposed, which utilizes the relative compliance offset normalized by the maximum offset obtained by the ASTM offset method. The normalized ASTM offset method is evaluated in a quantitative manner for the conventional estimation and also for the 2/π(2/PI) estimation method proposed by Paris et al. The normalized ASTM offset method improves remarkably correlation of crack growth rate stress ratio effects, in comparison with the ASTM offset method. Quantitative evaluation results indicate that the normalized ASTM offset method is very promising as a precise, simple and practical K<SUB>op</SUB> determination method alternative to the ASTM method. method is recommended.

Methods to predict fatigue crack growth are compared in a quantitative manner for crack growth test data<br/> of 2024-T351 aluminum alloy under narrow and wide band random loading. In order to account for the effect<br/> of load ratio, crack closure model, Hater's equation and NASGRO's equation have been employed. Load<br/> interaction effect under random loading has been considered by crack closure model, Willenborg's model and<br/> Wheeler's model. The prediction method using the measured crack opening results provides the best result<br/> among the prediction methods discussed for narrow and wide band random loading data.

Stress analysis of bogie frame by using the finite element method has been performed for the various loading conditions according to the UIC (International Union of Railways) Code 615-4. Multiaxial fatigue damage models such as signed von Mises method and typical critical plane theories were reviewed, and multiaxial fatigue analysis program (MUFAP) has been developed. Fatigue analysis of bogie frame under multiaxial loading was performed by using MUFAP and finite element analysis results. The procedure developed in this study is considered to be useful for the life prediction in preliminary design stage of railway components under multiaxial loading conditions. 3-dimensional surface modeling, mesh generation and finite element analysis were performed by Pro-Engineer, MSC/PATRAN and MSC/NASTRAN, respectively, which were installed in engineering workstation.

An elastic-plastic finite element analysis of fatigue crack closure is performed for plane strain conditions. The stabilization behavior of crack opening level and the effect of mesh size on the crack opening stress are investigated. In order to obtain a stabilized crack opening level for plane strain conditions, the crack must be advanced through approximately four times the initial monotonic plastic zone. The crack opening load tends to increase with the decrease of mesh size. The mesh size nearly equal to the theoretical plane strain cyclic plastic zone size may provide reasonable numerical results comparable with experimental crack opening data. The crack opening behavior is influenced by the crack growth increment and discontinuous opening behavior is observed. A procedure to predict the most appropriate mesh size for different stress ratio is suggested. Crack opening loads predicted by the FE analysis based on the procedure suggested resulted in good agreement with experimental ones within the error of 5%. Effect of the distance behind the crack tip on the crack opening load determined by the ASTM compliance offset method based on the load-displacement relation and by the rotational offset method based on the load-differential displacement relation is investigated. Optimal gage location and method to determine the crack opening load is suggested.

Methods for estimation of the effective stress intensity factor range (△Keff) are evaluated for narrow and wide band random loading crack growth test data of 2024-T351 aluminum alloy. Three methods of determining Kop, visual measurement, ASTM offset compliance method, and the neural network method proposed by Kang and Song, and three methods of estimating △Keff, conventional, the 2/PI0 and 2/PI methods proposed by Donald and Paris, are compared in a quantitative manner by using the results of fatigue crack growth life prediction under random loading. For all Kop determination methods discussed, the 2/PI0 and 2/PI methods of estimating △Keff provide better results than conventional method for narrow and wide band random loading data.

This paper aims to verify the static strength of a KHST gangway structure including fixed ring and carrying ring according to the load cases in the defined specification. The structure has been analyzed by the finite element method. Calculation carried out in the fields of linearity and small deformation. The admissible limit is the yield strength for the available materials. The analysis results show that Von-Mises stress at some locations of the structure is a little beyond the admissible limit. These results are successfully reflected on the adjusted design.

A FEM-based analytical approach was used to evaluate the static strength and the fatigue strength of a KHST bogie including eddy current brake system. Calculation was carried out in the fields of linearity and small deformation. The yield strengths were used as criteria for evaluating the static strength and the fatigue limits were used as criteria for evaluating the fatigue strength. The analysis results show that there is not any location that exceeds the allowable criteria.
