Vol.23 No.3

This research started with the question as to what effects and influences the mutual interaction between sports climbing teacher and learners will bring about to the study targets of “Teaching and Learning”, while I am using the PBL as its research method with the sample group consisting of the students majoring in Sports for All. At first they didn’t even understand how the PBL is different from the existing learning methods of techniques and how to use the group training session but, as they interacted with each other with the teacher playing the roles of manager, guide, helper, and coach, they got used to it. And, in the process of being preoccupied with the learning, the learners with the previous on-spot experiences of leisure activities were better in self-initiating activities and in the depth and precision of understanding the results than other learners, when it comes to their learning performance, which naturally led them to get equipped with the characteristics of leaders. Lastly, learners answered PBL is effective and appropriate in enhancing technical skills and teaching abilities, the aims of learning, but they also said the effectiveness and influences could be different, depending on how teacher use PBL, by which I confirmed the teacher play very important roles.

Vol.22 No.5

This research is to propose what they call the “ideal slope culture” as it is judged that the ski patrol needs to be spot-lighted as a sub-culture of sports and a sub-organization of the slope-culture. For this purpose, I carried out interviews with ski-patrols based on the results of my preliminary research on the images of ski-patrols that ski-boarders have. They are mostly in their 20’s and became ski-patrols by applying for recruitment ads on th Internet or just by recommendations of acquaintances. Also, as for those with the experience of one year, they often quit their jobs during the season as it is very tough to carry out their difficult duties in not-so-favorable environments with only a minimun degree of training for ski skills and first ads. And their daily routine is filled up with continual assignments from early in the morning till late at night and their duties cover almost all areas of the work in the slope. They believe the ideal slope is where there is a sufficient number of ski patrols with better working environments, where the three out system is put into place, and where everyone must wear safety helmets. They also believe ski patrols should be aware ski-boarders are insensitive to safety, which leads to lots of accidents, and that the strict guidances for them are needed. Lastly, they hoped the image of ski patrols should become better off by introducing a stricter screening process to give new licenses to ski patrol hopefuls.

Vol.22 No.6

This is about the chiefs of marine centers who are in charge of education by letting the trainees experience what the marine activities are really like, as they are in the first line of defence of marine leisure activities. As for the research method, I employed a mixed model approach; the survey of questionnaires as well as interviews of the attendees, basically centering on a narrative approach. I believed this kind of method would enhance the credibility and validity of the study. The research findings could be summarized in three main points as follows. First, chiefs in the centers have peculiar points of views about the center and attendees, which are totally different from others, which is basically because they are the leaders. This kind of social mentality mainly comes from their abundant experiences, their sense of duty, and their strong sense of ownership. Secondly, they feel humiliated when they are regarded just as money-collecting business owners but, nevertheless, they still put strong emphasis on the business aspects as the "reality is realty." They are doing their best to come up with the ways to expand their businesses and raise the profits. For example, they try to use government subsidies as much as possible. Their financial woe is especially deep when it comes to off-seasons. Lastly, they feel rewarded when there is a good evaluation about their education afterwards. But they fee! a little frustrated when the attendees demand fun activities rather than "education", as they are strongly aware of themselves as educators, not entertainment providers.

Vol.25 No.3

This study started from the supposition that sport major students are not immune from plagiarism. I tried to analyze the reasons, the patterns, and the problems lying on the instructors’ side, when it comes to plagiarism. By using the sequential Quan-Qual analysis, along with the triangulation between case studies, questionnaire analysis, and interviews on subjects, I tried to enhance the credibility of the study. The research shows the reasons why they illegally copy others’ work are the advanced media like the Internet, the lack of ethical education, and the low awareness about the matter. It also shows the patterns are usually using the Internet, the borrowing-and-lending of names between seniors and juniors, and illegal copying from various sources. As for the problems on the side of instructors, they are repeated assignments, and their low awareness about how serious this problem is. I am looking forwards to helping them understand this matter more deeply.

Vol.25 No.3

This study started from the recognition that, in spite of their tremenuous importance, no pre-arranged measures or manuals exist for emergent situations and proper safety measures in Taekwondo gyms. The study was conducted through the questionairs filled out by Taekowndo instructors and interviews with specialists. As for the accident cases, the major criteria of the study are the environmental accidents such as fires in locker rooms and injuries from the glass doors, the epidemic illnesses between students, the accidents happening on the way home after the training, and the accidents resulting from the negligence of duty in the teachers’ side. As for the problems in the preventive measures, the major criteria of the study are the poor awareness of safety problems along with the subsequent mismanagement of safety procedures, the lack of safetry-related education, and the lack of safety-related standard procedures.

Vol.21 No.1

Many research findings about injuries from skiing and snowboarding activities have been reported at home and abroad. This could mean an academic frame on winter sports is getting created. But most of the researches are only centering upon quantitative studies by the accumulation of data, which demands us to focus on more qualitative approaches. Therefore, this study selected ski-patrols who provide the first-aids to the injured, arriving in the accident scenes for the first time, as partners of the study, and tried to unfold an interpretive description, which means “knowing and understanding”, from their points of view as to why such injuries happen. This study shows the injuries can be divided into those from slope facilities, those from the lack of proper education, and those from the mental and physical conditions of the victims. The injuries from slope facilities could be sub-divided into the ones about weather conditions, the quality of snow, the courses’ overall environment, skilling techniques, and victims’ riding types. The injuries from the lack of proper education could be sub-divided into the ones from equipment’s flaws, inappropriate suits, wrong choices of slopes, and the lack of education. The injuries from the mental and physical conditions could be sub-divided into the ones from fatigue, drinking, physical conditions, and the capabilities of instant responses.

Vol.25 No.5

This study started to look into how Taekwondo gyms can overcome the management crisis. To do so, I used the theories from the study of failures established by Hatamura Yotaro in 2002, which is to find out what created the failures, rather than how to succeed. The study methods include surveys on study participants, along with the interviews with them, which gets mixed with explanatory designs. The results go as follows. First, as for the reason why they fail, they should look at the instructors’ motivations, characteristics, and the subsequent management outputs. Second, as for the contexts of failures, they can understand why they failed if they structurize the failures and generalize the factors of failures. Third, as for the reason why the failures repeat, the instructors fail to expect the structures and contexts of failures so that they repeat which can have a kind of spiral pattern. They need to pay a particular attention to this. Fourth, as for the successful management methods, I proposed the law of three out of one thousand times, the pitfall of failures, the detailed plans to prevent failures, and simulation for problem-solving practices.

Vol.24 No.5

This study is a basic research on how to manage the safety matters when it comes to descending leports, which is not to look into the legal matters but to set up standard manuals for safety management. As for the research methods, I chose the three descending leports facilities as sample groups from which I collected their safety manuals and, based upon them, I analyzed related documents such as official or private reports. The research findings show that their manuals are divided into the four: the operation manuals, the facility check-up manuals, the management manuals, and the rescue or first-aid manuals. The operation manuals deal with safety managers, operational heads, and field agents. The facility check-up manuals deal with periodical check-ups such as daily, weekly, and monthly check-ups. The management manuals deal with how to prepare gears and make other preparations for the sports, how to educate the participants, and how to effectively let all the parties involved understand the potential dangers in the sports. Lastly, the rescue or first-aid manuals deal with the sequential procedure: confirmation of the rescuees, secureing their safety, getting ready to rescue them, putting the rescue operation into practice, and completion of the rescue.

Vol.24 No.4

This study is a preview into the opinions held by professors and learners about the exclusive use of English in physcial education courses, as I would like to question the effectiveness and necessity of the exclusive use of English in physical education courses, which are usually conducted about actual techniques in the fileds, rather than about the theories in classrooms. The way of studying is to interview with three professors and six learners who have had the experiences of the exclusive use of English in sport-related courses. The result of this survey is supported by the questionaires filled out by 100 learners of such lectures in their major. It turns out professors are mostly negative about this type of lecture as they have difficulties in preparing for the lecture without any particular measures to solve this problem, also being concerned about insufficient English abilites of the students majoring in physical education. It turns out learners are confused about this type of English-only lecture environment, so they wish to directly propose instructors to wrap it up, which means they should come up with some effective measures to cope with this problem.
