통시 말뭉치에 기반한 언어 변화 연구 -20세기 신문 말뭉치의 구축과 분석-

이 논문에서는 역사 언어학과 전산 언어학의 융합 사례를 소개하고, 순방향의 언어 변화를 포착하기 위해 통시 말뭉치를 대상으로 단어 임베딩과 클러스터링 등의 전산 언어학적 방법론을 적용하였다. 실재하지 않는 조어의 재구와 검증이 쉽지 않고 언어 변화의 시대 구분에 대해 다양한 관점이 존재하며 방대한 양의 언어 자료에서 변화의 경향성을 찾기가 힘들었던 역사 언어학 연구의 어려움이 전산 언어학과의 융합을 통해서 극복되고 있다. 머신 러닝을 통해서 조어를 재구하고 연대를 구분하며 통시 말뭉치를 분석하여 언어 변화의 흐름을 파악할 수 있게 되었다. 한국어 통시 말뭉치를 구축하고 분석하여 언어 변화를 연구할 가능성을 모색하기 위해 20세기 전반기 신문 말뭉치를 대상으로 다양한 방법론 중에 단어 임베딩을 거친 클러스터링을 적용하여 어휘 사용 양상의 변화를 살펴보았다. 민주주의, 자유주의 등 ‘주의’가 후행하는 합성어를 대상으로 단어 임베딩 후 10년을 단위로 클러스터링을 진행한 결과 시간을 흐름에 따라 어휘 사용 양상의 변화를 포착하였다. This paper introduces a case study on the convergence of historical linguistics and computational linguistics. In this study, computational linguistic methodologies, such as word-embedding and clustering, were applied to a diachronic corpus to capture forward changes in language. Historical linguistics research is challenging because of the difficulties in reconstructing and verifying non-existent proto-languages. However, discoveries about how languages change are being made through computational linguistics using the vast amount of language data available to overcome these difficulties. Machine learning can be used to understand how languages change by reconstructing languages and analyzing diachronic corpuses from different periods. In this study, a Korean diachronic newspaper corpus from the first half of the 20th century was analyzed for changes in vocabulary usage patterns by applying word-embedded clustering. Clustering every 10 years after word-embedding for compound words that contain “jooeui” (ideology), such as “minjoojooeui” (democracy) and “jayoojooeui” (liberalism), showed changes in vocabulary usage over time.
