The effects of intake swirl ratio on combustion characteristics were investigated experimentally in a heavy duty LPG single cylinder combustion engine. Swirl ratios of intake port were measured by a steady flow rig test and flow characteristics near the piston crown were also observed by oil spot method with five different swirl ratios; 1.3, 2.0, 2.3, 2.8, 3.4. For the engine performance and combustion characteristics, engine output, efficiency, combustion duration, COV-imep, exhaust gas temperature and volumetric efficiency with the single cylinder combustion engine were studied. In the result, it was found that high swirl ratio, above Rs 2.8, is not good to develope a stable flame kernel and to produce high performance eventually, especially under lean bum conditions. The optimized swirl ratio for the heavy duty LPG engine was formed around Rs=2.0
