      • The Mystery of Marie Rog^et의 해석

洪一出 동남보건대학 인문사회과학연구소 2001 東南保健大學論文集 人文社會硏究 Vol.2 No.-

Having scored a great success with Dupin in 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue', Poe next cast about for some other theme which would serve as a medium for Dupin's impressive powers of deduction. He found it in an actual murder case, the brutal killing of a young girl in New York in the year 1842. Foe's thesis that the reasoning faculty and the imaginative faculty work most effectively in conjunction is provided in this tale. Poe's greatest triumph in this work is the manner in which he has Dupin reconstruct imaginatively the frame of mind of the murder on the basis of facts alone. Dupin uses the same method in reconstructing the thoughts of Marie Roget as in determining the aims of the newspapermen whose articles, throughout much of the narrative, are his texts. Poe deserves credit for having deliberately chosen to investigate a real crime under the guise of fiction.' a courageous thing to do at any time. Regardless of the consequences and motivated solely by a desire to establish the facts, to pursue the truth was both honourable and novel in his day.

      • The Cask of Amontillado 연구

        洪一出 동남보건대학 2002 論文集-東南保健大學 Vol.20 No.2

        E. A. Poe's gem of realism is 'The Cask of Amontillado'. It has been considered the result of Literari War, and it is considered a masterpiece because of its blend of horror at the protagonist's actions with the ironic humor of the situation. Burial alive receives an additional dimension of horror, for it is combined with the idea of punishment. It illustrates and conforms to perfectly many of Poe's literary theories about the nature of the short story. Finely wrought. tight, neat, with no loose ends or superfluities, it strikes with tremendous force. In general, this story fits well into Poe's dictum that everything in a well-written story must contribute to a total effect. Finally, every line and comment contributes to the totality or unity of effect that Poe sought to achieve. It is a completely unified work and while it is seemingly simple. it abounds in ironies of many kinds. The humor in this work is characterized by irony. And the entire situation is ironic. An ironical expression is one that implies the opposite of what it states. There are two kinds of irony in this work: the obvious ironies that Montresor creates and controls and the ironies motivated by the overall pattern of the story. It is only when we understand the present storytelling situation of Montresor that the total irony of the discourse becomes clear.

      • Ligeia의 의미

        일출 동남보건대학 2003 論文集-東南保健大學 Vol.21 No.2

'Ligeia' is an unsurpassed study of terror and insanity, a fantasia on the theme of love conquering the grave, on a deeper level it is a fascinating exploration of the quest of the poetical imagination for celestial beauty. For this reason, it remains one of Poe's finest contributions to the genre of the short story. When he came to revise the story, his artistic sense, rooted deeply in his own unconscious processes, did not permit the alteration of the conclusion to fit an interpretation essentially superficial and incomplete in its perception of the psychological origin of the story. and I cannot think that Poe, fully aware of the justice of Cooke's criticism in that view, would have left the denouement as it was originally written, unless he believed that there was more artistic verisimilitude in the story as he had created it than there was in the story as Cooke had interpreted it. Is this simply a tale of the opium-induced hallucinations of the narrator in which both Ligeia and Rowena are figments of the narrator's imagination? Is the story meant to provide a validation of Ligeia's theory of willpower, in which the narrator uses his willpower to summon her back to life? Is Ligeia a vampire-like creature who has fed on the soul of Rowena and inhabited her body to be reanimated? Or is this a kind of burlesque? Numerous critics have advanced theories to support each of the preceeding, but no consensus regarding the meaning of the tale has been reached. This story, obviously, is so rich in details' poems, epigraph, various styles and symbols etc., that it lends itself to many and varied interpretations. Therefore all of these interpretations have some probabilities, and it is thought that he could concieve and write 'Ligeia' considering many respects. If ‘the highest imagination' poe said is this kind, his words-'undoubtedly the best story I have written' and 'may be called my best tale' may be understood.

      • 애드가 앨런 포우의 문학이론

洪一出 동남보건대학 인문사회과학연구소 2000 東南保健大學論文集 人文社會硏究 Vol.1 No.-

The important contents of E. A. Poe's theories on literature are as follows: The purpose of literature is giving satisfaction to the feeling of beauty which lies in deep human mind. The satisfaction comes from the imagination of meditating beauty. Since the imagination is hard to last more than one or two hours, every work should be written and can be read in that period. The works of art are to have the unity of impression and the end of totality of effect which imposes excitement. Only melancholy and horror can create the things of soul beautifully. Handling a single event, pursuing a tight plot, and using an easy style, the works are to intend this effect from the beginning.
