Fission product from nuclear explosions and adioactive wastes from atomic industry are resulting the radioactive contamination of the marine environments. USSR carried out numerous nuclear tests since 1961 and already 16 times nuclear explosions from Red China by June, 1974. These nuclear tests had an effect directly to sea surrounding Korean peninsula. Therefore, an investigation for the radioactive contamination on an edible marine algae by the radioactive materials is necessary in Korea where numerous seaweeds, fish and shell fish are being consumed as the fond materials. The present report is concerned with concentration factors of gross beta activity and strontium-90 activity which has quite long physical half life and hazards to human being in case of numerous marine algae. Considering on the problems of radiation protection, the levels of radioactivity in the numerous edible marine algae in this study was estimate from the maximum permissible concentrations which recommended by International Commission on Radiological Protection.

The present paper deals with the trace metal contents among 54 samples of edible seaweeds collected from eight sampling sites along the coast of Korea from September, 1973 to April,1974. Measurements were made using the technique of atomic absorption spectrometer. In the results of the analysis, magnesium content is the most abundant, 1.125-25.194mg/g-dry, and the next is iron, 0.011-3.16 mg/g-dry. Manganese and zinc are around 0.01-7.07mg/g-dry, and copper is around 0.01-0.02 mg/g-dry, while lead, cadmium and cromium are less than 0.01mg/g-dry. The trace metal contents in edible seaweeds experimented are variable according to the species and the kinds of metal as above. Even in a single species, the contents of trace metal are generally different from one another among the materials collected at different places in the same season. But, it is noticeable that the obtained value of Sargassum thunbergii has comparatively higher than that of other species.
