Mr. Qian Zhongshu once believed that, when the Qing diplomats went to the theatre in the West, they did not view Western drama as art; they would sketch a play in their dairies, but would omit to mention the title and the author of the play. This essay makes a textual research on the Western dramas that the Qing diplomat Zhang Deyi had watched and recorded, and the result of which does not support such proposition. Zhang's records are very rich, in which the capability of the acceptation and appreciation of Western drama by the Qing diplomats is amply shown. A more careful study of his records will not only revises our evaluation of the materials about Western drama in the late Qing records of the diplomatic missions in the West, but will also exposes us to more facts concerning the literary communications between China and the West in late Qing, hence helps us reconsider the history of the Chinese acceptation of the Western literature.

The earliest national flag in Chinese history is that of Qing empire. However, there have been some widespread incorrect views concerning its origin and final establishment. This esay gives a critical review of the national flag of Qing empire in following respects: 1. the conflicts between China and Western countries that were precipitated by way of national flag; 2. the issuing of the yellow dragon flag; 3. Horatio Nelson Lay`s design of the national flag for Qing empire; 4. the first dragon flag that rose in the West; 5. the establishment of the final form of the national flag of Qing empire. By such discussion, the author tries to clear up some ambiguities about the issue of the national flag in Qing dynasty.
