An Exposition and Evaluation of Whitehead's Philosophical Theology : Part Ⅱ: The Whiteheadean Epistemology

Au, Peter Ying-Yuk Asian Center for Theological Studies and Mission 1988 ACTS 신학저널 Vol.3 No.-

A.N. Whitehead's metaphysics and epistemology cannot be separated. His metaphysics is an attempt to describe all of life's experience. It is a description or a science which "seeks to discover the general ideas which are indispensably relevant to the analysis of everything that happens (Italics mine)" (RM, 82). Hence his metaphysics presupposes his epistemology, and likewise, his epistemology presupposes his metaphysics. Both are mutually dependent. His epistemology, simply stated, is the doctrine of "experience" which correlates t o his metaphysics as the doctrine of ''process." Whitehead expresses it succintly, "we experience the universe, and we analyse in our con- sciousness a minute selection of its details" (MT, 121). The business of metaphysics is then, by a conscious effort to formulate its character, this totality, the universe. From this totality, namely the universe, the operations of conscious awareness, of language, of scientific identification and description, have made their selective emphases. Therefore, having understood Whitehead's metaphysics, we shall attempt to grasp that which he claims to have experienced and that which he comes to know as the totality of life.

An Exposition and Evaluation of Whitehead's Philosophical Theology : An evangelical response to process theology

Au, Peter Ying-Yuk Asian Center for Theological Studies and Mission 1986 ACTS 신학저널 Vol.2 No.-

Since the discovery of the quantum mechanics, magnetic and gravitational field theory, Darwin's evolutionary theory, Einstein's theory of relativity, the submolecular vibration and the superconductivity of the near-absolute zero temperature, the traditional Newtonian reality has been shattered. Reality is no longer considered as static corpuscular atoms bound by absolute space and time. These modern ecientific discoveries undermine the entier philosophy of science to account for the nature of things as they perceived it. Consequently, a new metaphysics is necessary to account for the modern science, human moral and religious experiences. Alfred North Whitehead was born at the opportune time to capture the desire of the age and apply the theories of the modern physics to the realm of reality. Thus he becomes and epitome of the inquiry into a new metaphysics. His discovery has a far-reaching implication in the areas of science, philosophy and religion. No scientist, philosopher and tehologian can afford to bypass Whitehead's metaphysics too lightly. whitehead's metaphysics openly challenges the theistic metaphysics and redefines the metaphysical attributes of God. The classical theistic metaphysical attributes of God are aseity, necessity, simplicity, infinity, eternity, purity, and unity. The classical theist conceives God as the necessary being which is uncaused and self-existing(aseity). Everything else in the world is a contingent being dependent upon this necessary being for its existence. Being necessary, God must be also a pure actuality without any potentiality to change. Likewise pure actuality has no parts or principle of division within Him, or He is a simple being. Similarly, he must be non-temporal and non-spatial, for time and space involve some kind of change. Furthermore, a pure actuality is unlimited, for potentiality is the principle of limitation. He must be eternal and infinite. All of the above metaphysical attributes of God are repudiated by the Whiteheadean metaphysics. In other words, the Whiteheadean metaphysics poses a serious challenge to the basic doctrine of orthodox faith, the doctrine of God. This study is an attempt to interact with the Whiteheadean metaphysics and epistemology. The purpose is to understand the system and be able to state it clearly and accurately. Having given the exposition of the system, the author will evaluate and citique it. First of all, we shall look into the development of the Whiteheaden metaphysics in its historical context.
