Scholarly Periodicals and World Literature Research and Exchange

The early appearance of periodicals in China is largely under the influence of Western scholarship. The first Chinese language magazine Chinese Monthly Magazine (Cha Shi Su MeiYue TongJi Zhuan), for instance, was jointly issued by two Christian Protestant missionaries in 1865 in Malacca. The earliest literary periodicals appeared in the late Qing Dynasty, of which the four representative popular fiction magazines were New Fiction (Xin Xiaoshuo), Illustrated Fictions (Xiuxiang Xiaoshuo), The All-Story Monthly (Yue yue Xiao Shuo) and Forest of Fiction (Xiaoshuo Lin). As periodicals serve as the principal medium for publishing research, they have a great impact upon the process of scholarly dissemination and communication. Ever since the New Culture Movement, scholarly journals, through introducing foreign literature into China, have been playing a vital part in literary research on world literature. In order for Chinese scholarly journals to be recognized worldwide, it is of great necessity to promote academic quality and realize the professionalization and internationalization of journals.

문학윤리학비평은 윤리의 입장에서 문학작품을 해석․분석․설명하고, 작가 및 문학과 연관된 문제를 연구하는 연구방법이다. 이것은 문학이 특정한 역사단계 속에서 윤리 관념․도덕생활에 대한 독특한 표현 형식이며, 문학은 본질적으로 윤리적인 예술이라고 여기는 연구방법이다. 문학은 언어의 예술이 아니라 바로 텍스트의 예술이다. 문학은 의식형태 혹은 심미적 의식형태가 아니며, 텍스트를 빌려 존재하는 일종의 물질형태이다. 교육 또는 교화는 문학의 본질적 속성이며, 심미는 문학의 교육적 기능을 위해 존재하는 문학의 2차적 기능이다. 문학윤리학비평은 본질적인 측면에서 문학의 윤리적 특성을 설명하고, 윤리적인 시각을 통해 문학 안에서 묘사되는 서로 다른 생활현상 및 그러한 현상이 생겨나게 되는 도덕적 원인을 설명한다. 또한 이러한 가치 판단을 할 때, 윤리․패륜․윤리적 금기․윤리적 무지․윤리의식․윤리적 환경․윤리적 신분․윤리적 선택 등은 모두 문학윤리학비평의 핵심적 술어가 된다. Ethical literary criticism intends to interpret, analyze, and explain literary works from the perspective of ethics and study about the content associated with writers and literature. It is not only a unique form of expression about ethical concept and ethical life in a particular historical stage, but also a research methodology of considering literature as a fundamentally ethical art. Literature is not an art of language but an art of texts. Literature itself is not a form of consciousness or aesthetic consciousness, but a certain type of material being that is manifest in the texts. Whereas the basic value of education and edification are essential attribute of literature, the aesthetic is the secondary function of literature that exists for the educational purpose of literature. Ethical literary criticism explains the ethical attribute of literature and phenomena of different life portrayed in the literature stemming from ethical standpoint. It also elucidates the moral cause of those phenomena. In addition, when the human being make the ethical selection, the terminologies such as ethics, immorality, ethical taboos, ethical ignorance, sense of ethics, ethical environment, ethical identity, and ethical selection become the core conceptual tools of ethical literary criticism.
