Creation of Meaning

This article is about a Socratic dialogue on happiness and meaning presented at the ICPP in Chuncheon. However, the article is in the form of an inner Socratic dialogue with myself. So, it starts with an exemplification of a search for happiness and meaning: a personal narrative. Some sections are introducing content: the Socratic methodology, the exercises given to the participants, while other sections are meta-level comments on those contents and on my performance as a facilitator: on the order of exposition, on the introduction to the workshop. The conclusion/ evaluation centers on the belief in the value of rationality, objective truth and dialogue, at the root of the Socratic methodology. This is contrasted with the subjectivist, relativist conceptions of truth, frequently encountered in some varieties of coaching. Guru-style coaches are the new Sophists.

A Philosophical Walk with Teenagers

This article reflects on a philosophical walk with teenagers. It relates how they adapted the exercise to the needs of their age group, and to the way they find themselves in the world. We reflect on what this manifests about teenagers relationship to representations and to communication by memes. We conclude by suggesting ways in which philosophical practitioners can adapt their ways of working with the public, in a world which has moved away from the oral traditions and away from the written words, and towards fast moving images and short attention span communication by memes.

“Métissages” in the Ardennes: Reflexions on the Conditions of Possibility of Authentic Encounters

The “Métissages” project concerns encounters around artistic workshops between people from different backgrounds: young people, pensioners, asylum seekers, artists, social workers, neighbors in the Ardennes, a rural part of Belgium. The author shares her point of views on what makes an encounter possible, on the obstacles that hinder authentic encounters, and on what is at stake in the most improbable of encounters. The author questions the role of art and of art-facilitators in the face of the challenges of our modern world.

Arts and Philosophy Practice Two Workshop Descriptions

Dialogism gave at the 14th ICPP in Bern, a one-hour version of a longer “arts and thinking” workshop, especially adapted to philosophy practitioners. This paper describes first the original workshop performed for L'Atelier CEC at Integra+. After a brief reflexion on the methods and objectives of L'Atelier, this paper describes the adapted workshop in its Bern version and gives the first feedback of the participants. Then, when the artistic experience is used as a metaphor of the philosophy practice, the paper retraces the deeper questions that were asked during the workshop and the discussion on evaluation of quality that could then arise from such a shared experience. In conclusion, I offer my own reflexions as to the interaction between norms and values in philosophy practice.
