Predicting Second Language Writing Proficiency in the Different Genres of Writing Using Computational Tools

Jiseon Ryu 한국응용언어학회 2020 응용 언어학 Vol.36 No.1

This study explored if linguistic indices calculated by computational tools can predict L2 writing proficiency scored by human raters. Using the latest computational tools such as TAALES, TAACO, and TAASSC with learner corpus (YELC), the language data related to lexical sophistication, syntactic complexity, and cohesion were measured and analyzed. The findings of this study show that the L2 writing proficiency judged by human raters can be significantly predicted by linguistic features. Among the linguistic features, the indices of lexical sophistication, such as word frequency, psycholinguistic word information, and ngrams, have the strongest power in predicting the narrative and argumentative writing quality. Syntactically, the fine-grained indices concerning clausal and nominal complexity contributed to explaining writing proficiency. While general characteristics were similar across the two genres, the distinctive linguistic features of each genre were identified. These findings illuminate a variety of aspects of L2 learners’ writing development and allow us to draw pedagogical implications on teaching and assessing writing in the Korean EFL context.

착지 시 달리기 속도 증가가 충격 쇼크 흡수에 미치는 영향

        ( Jiseon Ryu ) 한국운동역학회 2020 한국운동역학회지 Vol.30 No.3

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of increased running speed on the magnitude of impact shock attenuation in high frequency (9~20 Hz) at support phase on the treadmill running. Method: Twenty-four healthy male heel-toe runners participated in this study. Average age, height, mass, and preference running speed were 23.43±3.78 years, 176.44±3.38 cm, 71.05±9.04 kg, and 3.0±0.5 m/s, respectively. Three triaxial accelerometer (Noraxon, USA) were mounted to the tuberosity of tibia, PSIS (postero-superior iliac spine), and forehead to collect acceleration signals, respectively. Accelerations were collected for 20 strides at 1,000 Hz during treadmill (Bertec, USA) running at speed of 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 m/s. Power Spectrum Density (PSD) of three acceleration signals was calculated to use in transfer function describing the gain and attenuation of impact shock between the tibia and PSIS, and forehead. One-way ANOVA were performed to compare magnitude of shock attenuation between and within running speeds. The alpha level for all statistical tests was .05. Results: No significant differences resulted for magnitude of the vertical and resultant impact shock attenuation between the tibia and PSIS, and forehead between running speeds. However, significant differences within running speed were found in magnitude of the vertical shock attenuation between tibia and PSIS, tibia and forehead at speed of 2.5, 3.0 m/s, respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, it might be conjectured that muscles covering the knee and ankle joints and shoe's heel pad need to strengthen to keep the lower extremities from injuries by impact shock at relatively fast running speed that faster than preferred running speed.

달리기 속도 증가에 따른 성별 CoP (Center of Pressure)의 복잡성 패턴

        Ryu, Jiseon 한국운동역학회 2019 한국운동역학회지 Vol.29 No.4

Objective: The goal of this study was to determine the center of pressure (CoP) complexity pattern in approximate entropy technique between genders at different conditions of running speed. Background: It is conducted to evaluate the complexity pattern of CoP in the increment of running speed to have insights to injury prediction, stability, and auxiliary aids for the foot. Method: Twenty men (age=22.3±1.5 yrs.; height=176.4±5.4 cm; body weight=73.9±8.2 kg) and Twenty women (age=20.8±1.2 yrs.; height=162.8±5.2 cm; body weight=55.0±6.3 kg) with heel strike pattern were recruited for the study. While they were running at 2.22, 3.33, 4.44 m/s speed on a treadmill (instrumented dual belt treadmills, USA) with a force plate, CoP data were collected for the 10 strides. The complexity pattern of the CoP was analyzed using the ApEn technique. Results: The ApEn of the medial-lateral and antero-posterior CoP in the increment of running speed showed significantly difference within genders (p<.05), but there were not statistically significant between genders at all conditions of running speed. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, CoP complexity pattern in the increment of running speed was limited to be characterized between genders as an indicator to judge the potential injury and stability. Application: In future studies, it is needed to investigate the cause of change for complexity of CoP at various running speed related to this study.

보행 시 여성 노인의 하지 관절 근력과 국부 동적 안정성과의 관계

        ( Jiseon Ryu ) 한국운동역학회 2021 한국운동역학회지 Vol.31 No.1

Objective: The objective of the present study was to analyze the relationship between strength of the lower extremity's joints and their local dynamic stability (LDS) of gait in elderly women. Method: Forty-five elderly women participated in this study. Average age, height, mass, and preference walking speed were 73.5±3.7 years, 153.8±4.8 cm, 56.7±6.4 kg, and 1.2±0.1 m/s, respectively. They were tested torque peak of the knee and ankle joints with a Human Norm and while they were walking on a treadmill at their preference speed for a long while, kinematic data were obtained using six 3-D motion capture cameras. LDS of the lower extremity's joints were calculated in maximum Lyapunov Exponent (LyE). Correlation coefficients between torque of the joints and LyE were obtained using Spearman rank. Level of significance was set at p<.05. Results: Knee flexion torque and its LDS was negatively associated with adduction-abduction and flexionextension movement (p<.05). In addition, ratio of the knee flexion torque to extension and LDS was negatively related to internal-external rotation. Conclusion: In conclusion, knee flexion strength should preferentially be strengthened to increase LDS of the lower extremity's joints for preventing from small perturbations during walking in elderly women.

Diagnosis of Korean EFL High School Students’ Reading Fluency Using Informal Reading Inventory

Jiseon Ryu,Byungmin Lee 아시아영어교육학회 2021 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.18 No.2

The study attempts to examine and diagnose Korean EFL high school students’ English reading fluency using an informal reading inventory (IRI). In performing IRI reading tasks, 68 eleventh grade high school students were asked to read aloud the graded texts across 14 levels and answer the reading comprehension questions. As a result of the IRI administration, the data of the 68 students’ oral reading fluency levels, word reading accuracy, decoding errors, and oral reading rate were collected. The results revealed that the students’ ORF levels are widely dispersed. Notably, about 40 percent of the students seemed to be able to read the text of Levels 2 and 3 independently, while approximately 50 percent of the students showed a frustration level in reading at Levels 3 through 5. Besides, less variability was demonstrated in word reading accuracy except for the lower fluency group. The reading rates were found to increase as the participants’ reading levels were higher despite the fact that there exists a significant difference in reading rate within and across the three reading fluency groups. These findings shed light on different aspects of L2 learners’ reading development and allow us to draw pedagogical implications in the Korean EFL context.

      • Medical Practices and Attitudes of Dual-Licensed Medical Doctors in Korea

        Ryu, Jiseon,Choi, Byunghee,Lim, Byungmook,Kim, Sina,Yun, Youngju Hindawi Publishing Corporation 2013 Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medic Vol.2013 No.-

Unique dual medical system in Korea has resulted in the emergence of dual-licensed medical doctors (DLMDs) who have both traditional Korean medicine (KM) and Western medicine (WM) licenses. There have been few studies on DLMDs in spite of their growing number and importance within the medical system. We surveyed the current status and attitudes of DLMD to assess their role in integrative medicine. Questionnaires were administered to the members of the association of DLMD. Data from 103 DLMD were collected and statistically analyzed. 41.4% of DLMD were copracticing both WM and KM at a single clinic, preferring the WM approach for physical examinations, laboratory tests, and education for patients—and the KM approach for treatment and prescription. Musculoskeletal, gastroenterologic, and allergic diseases were considered to be effectively treated with co-practice. DLMD highly agreed on the efficiency of copractice for disease control and patients' satisfaction. On the other hand, they regarded the lack of health insurance coverage for copractice and increased medical expenditure as major problems in providing co-practice. To expand the role of DLMD as mediators of integration in primary health care, the effectiveness of their co-practice should be evaluated and a corresponding health insurance reimbursement system should be established.

A Longitudinal Study of English Achievement of Korean EFL Young Adolescent Students: Focusing on Initial English Proficiency, English Private Tutoring, and Urbanicity

        Jiseon Ryu,Byungmin Lee 한국영어교육학회 2024 ENGLISH TEACHING(영어교육) Vol.79 No.1

The present study aimed to analyze the developmental trajectories of English achievement and exposure time through private education, utilizing univariate and multivariate latent growth curve analysis. This study used a subset of the Gyeonggi Education Panel Study data from 2012 to 2017. The results indicated consistent disparities in the growth of English achievement, depending on the student’s proficiency levels at the starting point. In particular, the early exposure to private tutoring was significantly and closely related to the initial status and the growth trajectory of English achievement. When the sample was classified by urbanicity, the findings suggested that the gap in English achievement was likely to increase over time across the two regions, with a stronger correlation with private tutoring found in urban areas. These results underscore the need for educational intervention for students in less advantageous conditions, and they provide valuable pedagogical implications for teaching English in the Korean EFL context.
