Recently, we introduced a new method for rapid screening of bacterial species- or subspecies-specific DNA probes, named "inverted dot blot hybridization screening method". In that study, we applied this method to develop subspecies-specific DNA probes for Fusobacterium. Among 96 candidate-DNA probes, which were screened by the new method, 4 probes were confirmed as being putatively subspecies-specific: probe Fu4 for F. nucleatum subsp. polymorphum, probe Fv35 for F. nucleatum subsp. vincentii and probe Fs17 for F. nucleatum subsp. fusiforme. In addition, data from the inverted dot blot hybridization showed Fu12, one of the 96 candidate probes described above, was hybridized with only genomic DNA of F. nucleatum ATCC 25586. In the present study, we evaluated the specificity of the DNA probe Fu12, as to whether it is specific for the strain ATCC 25586 of F. nucleatum by Southern blot analysis. The data showed that probe Fu12 is potentially specific for F. nucleatum ATCC 25586 and could be useful for the detection and identification of the strain, particularly in confirming the authenticity of the strain.

The propose of this in vitro study is to elucidate the antibacterial effects of 7 gargle products on market to the 4 kinds of oral bacteria related with dental caries. S. mutans, S. sobrinus, L. casei and A. viscosus were examined. MIC was determined by a serial dilution method. Gagrin Dent solution showed the lowest value, and Chica Chica showed the highest value. However most gargle solutions showed the similar MIC values with the range of 0.2∼6.25% except Chica Chica. L. casei showed relatively high value of MIC.
Screening of Antimicrobial Activity among the Therapeutic Herbal Extracts on Dental Pathogens
Baek, Dong-Heon 대한구강생물학회 2007 International Journal of Oral Biology Vol.32 No.2
The periodontal diseases and dental caries are major infectious diseases in oral cavity. Many of the preventive and therapeutic dental products contain the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory components. But some of these antimicrobial have weak points such as coloration, burning sensation and insolubility in water. We have screened the therapeutic herbal extracts of the Plant Extract Bank for the antimicrobial activity on the major dental pathogens by growth inhibition assay. For the Porphyromonas gingivalis, 8 herbal extracts had an antimicrobial activity, 11 herbal extracts for the Prevotella intermedia, 43 herbal extracts for the Haemophilus actinomycetemcomitans and 61 herbal extracts for the Streptococcus mutans. Among these extracts, 6 herbal extracts had an antimicrobial activity for more than 3 species of dental pathogens. These extracts are Araliae Cordatae Radix, Crassirhizomae Rhizoma, Mori Radicis Cortex, Psoraleae Semen, Pini Ramulus and Sieges- beckiae Herba. All of effective extracts were CA group, ethanol extracts. Among these 6 herbal extracts, only Crassirhizomae is known to have a antibacterial effects. Therefore these herbal extracts have a possibility to be a candidate for a major antibacterial components in dental products.

Streptococcus salivarius is a beneficial bacterium in oral cavity, and some strains of this bacterium are known to be probiotics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect and mechanism of S. salivarius G7 lipoteichoic acid (LTA) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and LTA of periodontopathogens. The surface molecules of S. salivarius G7 was extracted, and single- or cotreated on human monocytic cells with LPS and LTA of periodontopathogens. The induction of cytokine expression was evaluated by real-time PCR and ELISA. After labeling fluorescence on LPS and LTA of periodontopathogens, it was co-treated with S. salivarius LTA to the cell. The bound LPS and LTA were measured by a flow cytometer. Also, the biding assay of the LPS and LTA to CD14 and LPS binding protein (LBP) was performed. The surface molecules of S. salivarius G7 did not induce the expression of inflammatory cytokines, and S. salivarius G7 LTA inhibited the inflammatory cytokines induced by LPS and LTA of periodontopathogens. S. salivarius G7 LTA inhibited the binding of its LPS and LTA to cells. Also, S. salivarius G7 LTA blocked the binding of its LPS and LTA to CD14 and LBP. S. salivarius G7 has an inhibitory effect on inflammation induced by LPS or LTA of periodontopathogens, and may be a candidate probiotics for prevention of periodontitis.

Background: The treatment with 308 nm excimer laser has used widely for vitiligo. However, there were few clinical reports about the therapeutic effects of excimer laser in korean literatures. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical efficacy of the treatment of vitiligo patients in korea using a 308 nm excimer laser. Methods: The 85 patients were treated using a 308 nm excimer laser, which was performed twice a week, for a total of 20 treatments. We analyzed grade of repigmentation with regarding to various clinical parameters. Results: Thirty-one of the 85 patients (36.5%) achieved more than 50% repigmentation. The response to treatment was related to the age, duration of vitiligo, type of vitiligo and site of lesions (respectively, p=0.049, 0.030, 0.001, 0.001). There were no relationship between response to the treatment and the sex and history of previous treatments (respectively, p=0.636, 0.781). Twenty-nine patients (34.1%) had side effects including erythema, perilesional hyperpigmentation and burn, but there were mild and transient. Conclusion: The use of the 308 nm excimer laser for the treatment of vitiligo patients is effective and safe. However, patient age, duration of vitiligo, type of vitiligo and site of lesions may be the key factors affecting the clinical outcome.

Erythema annulare centrifugum is an inflammatory skin disorder of unknown etiology characterized by erythematous urticarial papules that enlarge in a centrifugal pattern to form annular appearance. These lesions are usually asymptomatic. Erythema annulare centrifugum generally tends to be a chronic condition. It develops most frequently in adults between 30 and 50 years of life, and only a few infantile cases have been reported in the English literature. Herein, we present an additional case of infantile erythema annulare centrifugum with a review of the literature. (Korean J Dermatol 2013;51(10):817∼820)
