14세기 후반부터 16세기 초기에 걸쳐 일본 각지의 권력자들이 조선에 대장경을 요청하여 모두 50질을 하사받으면서 대장경이 일본에 전래되었다. 당시 일본 각지의 권력자들이 어떤 이유로 대장경을 요청하여 그것을 어떻게 활용하였는가를 자세히 알 수 없으나 아시카가(足利)가에서는 사찰에서 행해졌던 장군의 생일기도에서 대장경을 전독하였던 사례가 있었다. 유구국(琉球國)도 일본 각지의 권력자와 마찬가지로 조선에 대장경을 요청하여 하사받았다. 그런데 유구국왕였던 쇼타이큐(尙泰久)는 불교를 신앙하여 가이인 쇼코(芥穩承琥)라는 일본 교토(京都)에서 온 선승(禪僧)에게 귀의하고 있었다. 가이인이 유구불교계의 융성에 큰 영향을 미친 사람이기도 한다. 그래서 이 글에서는 유구국의 대장경 요청 이유와 그 활용에 대해서 교토 선종계(禪宗界)와 가이인의 관계로부터 고찰하였다. 유구국의 대장경 요청 이유는 사찰 건립에 즈음하여 법보인 대장경이 없었기 때문이었으나 실제로는 이것을 전독함으로써 진호국가를 기원하려고 했던 것이다. 이와 같은 사례는 일본 교토의 선종 사찰에서도 있었다. 즉 이것이 장군 생일에 생일기도이다. 생일기도는 장군 개인의 생일을 축하할 뿐만 아니라 사해청평(四海淸平)과 만민안락(萬民安樂)을 기원하기 위해서 행해졌고 이른바 호국기도였다. 이와 같은 기도가 유구국에서도 행해지게 되었다고 추측됨은 일본 교토에서 온 가이인의 영향이 크다. 가이인은 교토 선종 사찰을 모델로 삼아 유구국에서 불교를 융성시키고 나아가 대장경을 전독하여 국가 안녕을 기원하려고 한 것이라 생각된다. From the late 14th century to the early 16th century, Japanese Shogunate and Daimyos imported block books of the Koryo-Tripitaka(고려대장경) at Haein Temple in the Chosen Dynasty period. As a result, 50 sets of printing blocks was granted by the Chosen Dynasty and brought in Japan. But, Ashikaga family(足利家) allowed the Koryo-Tripitaka to be completely released as a prayer for a general`s birthday(生日祈禱). Ryukyu country(琉球國) also required the Chosen Dynasty to send her the Koryo-Tripitaka, and was granted. Shou Taikyu(尙泰久) who was the King of Ryukyu at that time, believed in Buddhism and converted to the Zen Buddhism by a priest called Kaiin-Shoko(芥穩承琥) who came from Kyoto. Kaiin had some kind of influence on the prosperity of the Ryukyu`s Buddhism. Therefore, I considered the reason Ryukyu country required the Tripitaka is directly related to Zen Buddhism world and Kaiin in Kyoto. The Tripitaka was installed in a temple. But, the Rulers of Ryukyu country wished to pray for making a country safe by reciting sutras of the Tripitaka. Such an example is the same as a prayer for a general`s birthday generally performed at a Zen Buddhism temple in Kyoto. It was not only a prayer of congratulating on a general`s birthday, but also further the defense of the fatherland. This prayer came to be carried out in Ryukyu country. Kaiin that came from Kyoto, had great influence with Ryukyu country. I think that he let Buddhism in Ryukyu prosper as Zen Buddhism temples in Kyoto, and let priests recite the sutras of the Tripitaka for national tranquility.
