An exploratory study on distributed thermometry using OFDR (Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry) for automotive battery application is presented. The thermometry technique in this study uses thin and flexible optical fiber as a sensing medium. Temperature measurements are made along the sensing medium at regular intervals and is unaffected by electrical interferences. A single optical fiber sensor is capable of monitoring multiple cells within an automotive battery module with good temperature sensitivity and spatial resolution. In this study, a preliminary sensor was experimentally verified by heating a section of the sensor up to 55℃. Results showed good temperature accuracy of ±5℃ at 10㎝ of spatial resolution.
