해남 선비 김여휘의 유구 표류와 송환 경로(1662~1663년)

1662년 해남 선비 김여휘와 제주 사람이 포함된 32명의 조선인이 해난 사고를 당하여 유구국 아마미오시마로 표류하였다. 그들은 9월 24일[서력 11.4] 제주 별도표를 출발하여 해남으로 향하다가 추자도 분근에서 서북풍을 만나 표류하기 시작하여 10월 5일[서력 11.15] 유구인에 의해 구조되었다. 그들 중 4명은 그들의 동료가 구조되기도 전에 배 안에서 목미 말라숨졌다. 생존자 28명은 그곳에서 사쓰마로 이송된 뒤 나가사키에서 조사를 받고 대마도로 넘겨졌다. 1663년 5월 27일[서력 7.2] 대마도에 도착하자마자 김여휘 일행은 다시 심문을 받았다. 일본에서 모든 조사 일정을 마치고 그들이 부산포로 건너온 것은 7월5일[서력 8.7]이었다. 왜관에서 다시 조사를 받은 그들은 부산첨사화 동래부사에게 인계된 뒤에도 마지막으로 조선측의 조사를 받아야만 했다. 김여휘 일행이 고향 해남으로 돌아온 것은 7월 25일 [서력 8.27]이었는데, 그의 아내는 4월17일[서력 5.23] 에 이미 사망하고 말았다. 이 해난 사고는 1663년 한ㆍ일 간 울릉도 쟁계와 관련되어 있는 안용복의 제1차 도항, 그리고 1802년 문순득의 유구 아마미오시마 표류와 비교하여 분석할 수 있는 좋은 소재가 된다. In 1662, thirty-two Koreans, including Kim Yeowhi, who was a classical scholar in Haeman County, and Jeju islanders, encountered an accident at sea and their ship drifted to Amami Oshima island, in Ryukyu. They were rescued by Ryukyuan islanders on the fifth day of the tenth month(or Novermber 15 in the Gregorian calendar), after having departed for Haenam, their home town, from the Byeoldo port in Jeju island on the twenty fourth of the ninth month(or Novermber 4 in the Gregorian calendar), but having been set adrift near Chuja island by a northwester. Four people among them died of thirst before the group was rescued. These twenty-eight survivors were sent from Ryukyu to Satsuma domain in southern Kyushu in Japan, and then to Thusbima domain after the Japanese government conducted an investigation in Nagasaki. Kim Yeowhi and his fellow passengers were immediately interrogated upon their arrival in Tsushima on the twenty-seventh day of the fifth month(or July 2 in the Gregorian calendar) in 1663. They returned to Joseon, at the Busan port, on the fifth day of the sixth month(or August 7 in the Gregorian calendar), after clearing the investigations in Japan. They also had to undergo questioning at the Japan House(K. Waegwan), a compound where Tsushima islanders resided, in Busan and investigation by the Korean government after being delivered to Busan military base and the Dongnae County office. Kim Yeowhi and his colleagues retuned to Haenam County, on the twenty-fifth day of the seventh month(or August 27 in the Gregorian calendar). However, Kim’s wife had died on the seventeenth day of the fourth month(or May 23 in the Gregorian calendar). This maritime accident is useful for comparative study with the first voyage of An Yong-bok to Japan, which related to the territory dispute over Ulleung island between Korea and Japan in 1663, and drifting of Mun Sun-deuk to Amami Oshima in 1802.
