This study examined the tragic reality in life and a problem about its recovery shown in Oh Jeong-hee' s literature targeting Oh Jeong-hee' s first feature-length novel 『Bird』. In 『Bird』is revealed the exhausting life in young brother and sister who were abandoned by parents. Oh Jeong-hee shows serious self-reflection on powerful force of helping a human being's spiritual maturity, as well as exploring the origin of violence, which is prevalent in this world through 'juvenile's sight.' As the juvenile character in 『Bird』is a meaning available for concentratedly reproducing devastation in the world, it stands for a human being's elemental situation that can solve a worry about existence oneself even in any situation. In a sense that a father's impulsive violence, which was mirrored in T eyes as a young girl, accidentally occurs, it is essentially same as property in birth, old age, illness, and death. This piece of work is shown that the origin of violence relies on a human being's 'foolishness,' thereby being emphasized that it is not a problem that will be solved by social condition. It belongs to the more elemental anguish. At the same time, 'I,' who am young, stare at the inside of 'fake mothers' who give a help. As a result, even 'fake mothers' are suffering uneasiness unavailable for knowing the origin, thereby realizing that they cannot be expected perfect love. Nevertheless, the importance of 『Bird』 depends on 'voice that is heard to the inside of 'me.' 'I' cure tired soul while remembering 'voice' that is heard faintly with dividing a wasted curtain in the world. A writer suggests that 'invisible powerful force' exists that functions in 'an abyss of life.' The folklore, which is transmitted by grandmothers, is substance of 'invisible powerful force' as well. Oh Jeong-hee aims to seek for a clue that will cure and rescue the impoverished reality through this tradition, That is seen to be related to group unconsciousness. However, Oh Jeong-hee doesn't present easy solution anymore. Aphorism is just transmitted with saying that even one small piece in truth cannot be obtained unless presenting self as an offering of sacrifice, while persistently exploring a dark abyss of life. 오정희는 소설을 통해 부단한 자기성찰과 사색의 서계를 구축해가는 작가이다. 본고에서는 오정희의 첫 장편 소설 『새』에 드러난 세계의 비극적 실상 중 하나인 폭력의 양상과 인간 회복의 문제를 검토하였다. 텍스트로 삼은 『새』에는 ‘보이지 않는 아버지들’과 ‘가짜 어머니들’에 둘러싸인 어린 남매의 고단한 삶이 펼쳐져있다. 오정희는 ‘아이들의 낯선 눈’을 통해 이 세계에 만연된 폭력의 근원을 탐색하는 동시에 그 해결책으로 인간의 의식세계 바깥에서 생겨나 인간의 영적 성숙을 돕는 강력한 힘의 존재를 희미하게나마 보여주고자 한다. 『새』의 유년 인물은 세계의 황폐함을 응축적으로 재현할 수 있는 의미체로서, 어떤 상황에서도 존재의 불안을 스스로 해소할 수 없는 인간의 근원적 상황에 대한 제유이다. 유년 주체의 눈에 비친 아버지의 충동적인 폭력성은 생노병사에 내재한 우발성과 본질적으로 동일하다. 이 작품에서는 폭력의 근원이 인간의 ‘어리석음’이라는 치유할 수 없는 영역에 잠복해 있음을 보여줌으로써 그것이 인간 실존의 본원적 고통에 맞닿아 있음을 선명하게 드러낸다. 동시에 버려진 ‘나’와 동생에게 도움을 베푸는 가짜 엄마들의 내면에 대한 응시는 이들이 모두 근원을 알 수 없는 불안에 내몰리고 있어 또 다른 폭력의 양상을 띠고 있음을 세밀하고 생생하게 묘파해낸다. 그러나 『새』의 바탕에는 세미하지만 견고하게 자리 잡으 ‘목소리’가 존재한다. 그것은 아주 오래전부터 불모에 가까운 세계의 황폐함을 치유해왔다. 그 목소리의 주인은 오정희 소설이 보여주는 구원의 단초가 되는 ‘생성적 타자’들이라 할 수 있다. 작가는 ‘삶의 심연’에 작용하는 ‘눈에 보이지 않는 강력한 힘’이 존재함을 암시하며, 이를 통해 구원의 실마리를 찾고자 한다. 그러나 오정희는 더 이상 섣부른 해결책을 제시하지 않는다. 삶의 어두운 심연을 집요하게 탐색하며 ‘자신을 희생 제물로 내어주지 않으면 진실의 작은 조각 하나도 얻을 수 없다’는 경구를 전해줄 뿐이다.
