「욱면비면불서승(郁面婢念佛西昇)」의 불교문화적 담론 연구

삼국시대에 佛敎가 전래된 이후 그 가르침은 위로는 왕실에서 아래로는 일반 백성들에게 이르기까지 광범위하게 전파되었다. 불교의 전국적 전파과정에서 형성되었던 불교 說話를 『三國遺事』에서 읽을 수 있다. 특히 「郁面婢念佛西昇」, 「廣德 嚴莊」, 「南白月二聖 努肹夫得 怛怛朴朴」 등은 衆生의 極樂往生을 소재로 한 작품이다. 이 작품들은 불교의 民衆敎化와 중생의 死後에 대한 期待를 살피는 데 중요한 자료이다. 본 연구의 대상 작품은 불교의 彌陀信仰을 반영하여 형성되었던 「郁面婢念佛西昇」이며, 鄕傳과 僧傳으로 구성되어 있다. 향전은 修行을 돕는 일을 하던사람[知事者]이 戒를 받지 못해 축생도에 떨어져 부석사의 소로 환생하고, 소는 등에 실어 나르던 佛經의 힘을 입어 다시 인간세계에 여자 종으로 태어나며, 이 여자의 이름이 郁面이라고 전한다. 그리고 향전은 郁面이 주인의 천대와 멸시를 견디며 자기 신분의 한계와 몸의 고통을 잊고 염불하여 마침내 極樂往生하였음을 전하는 이야기다. 본 연구에서는 인과론적인 생사윤회와 彌陀信仰의 極樂往生에 대한 불교문화적 담론을 살펴보았다. 郁面의 생사윤회와 極樂往生談은 신비체험을 통해 중생들을 교화하기 위한 假說 方便이다. 한편 불교 수행을 통하여 멸시와 천대를 견디는 忍辱과 몸을 잊어버린 無我를 통해 自性의 청정함을 깨달아 진정한 自由와 영원한 幸福을 이룬다는 가르침은 불교 교리의 實談이다. 현실세계는 시간과 공간을 초월하여 너와 나 사이에 갈등하고 대립하는 모순의 세계이다. 이 세계에서 자유와 행복을 얻기 위해서는 천대와 멸시를 견디며 몸을 잊어야 한다. 또한 나와 너, 있음과 없음, 옳음과 그름의 분별로 인한 집착과 相을 초월하여야 한다. 「郁面婢念佛西昇」의 불교문화적 담론은 무절제한 소유욕과 분별로 인한 갈등과 대립이 만연한 오늘날의 현실에 시사해주는 바가 크다. The Samguk Yusa includes Buddhist folk tales that were delivered by word of mouth in the Silla era. These folk tales are important data for analyzing how Buddhism’s popularization and cultural imagination were related to the Silla people’s expectations for the future. The current study focuses on Wukmyenbiyembwulsesung(one of the folk tales in Samguk Yusa), which was created on ground of Buddhism's Mita faith. The protagonist is a female servant named Wukmyen. In her past life, she was a cow in Buseoksa which carried Buddhist texts. Thanks to carrying Buddhist texts, she was reborn as a servant In the human world. By enduring her master's contempt and practicing Buddha-chanting, Wukmyen was able to reach the Buddha Land. From a Buddhist perspective, this study analyzed meanings of cultural discourses of Wukmyenbiyembwulsesung, focusing on the process of reincarnation (birth, death and rebirth) and the Silla people’s aspiration to go to the Buddha Land. Wukmyen’s story is a hypothetical one that was mainly used to enlighten the people about reincarnation and the Buddha Land. It also reflects the Buddhist doctrine that true freedom and eternal happiness can be achieved by realizing the purity of one’s self, enduring contempt, and practicing selflessness. The real world consists of conflict between the other and the self across time and space. To have freedom and happiness in the world, one should endure contempt and practice selflessness. Thus, the meanings of cultural discourses of Wukmyenbiyembwulsesung have important implications to the contemporary world.

『今昔物語集』に於ける夢の一考察 : 本朝?法部を中心として

In this paper, by dividing the dreams within the "Konjaku Monogatari Shu" into four categories - the dream of "conception," the dream of "previous life," the dream of "rebirth into paradise," and the dream of "spiritual experience" - the characteristics of each dream and the role of dreams within Konjaku Monogatari, have been studied. There are five stories on the dream of "conception." The stories all have a same pattern of an infertile woman who prays to gods and Buddha, and conceives after dreaming of a treasure coming into her belly. Fifteen stories can be found on the dream of "previous life" that testify the retribution from the previous life to the present life. The fifteen stories can be divided into a story that explains, through connection to the previous life, the reason why Hokkekyo cannot be memorized, and a story that tells characteristics of animals from the previous life remain in our bodies. The dream of "rebirth into paradise" can be found mainly in volume thirteen and volume fifteen. They can be divided into a dream that tells, before one's death, rebirth into paradise in the next world, a dream that shows rebirth into paradise at one's deathbed, and a dream that notifies the rebirth, of another person, into paradise after death. The dream of "spiritual experience" is found mainly in volume sixteen and volume seventeen. In this dream, Kannon Bosatsu and Jizou Bosatsu show their spiritual experiences in the dream. The content of the dream varies; for example, there are dreams that give wealth and dreams that save people from epidemic and starvation.
