This paper analyzed the effects of geopolitical risks in the Middle East on energy markets including the crude oil price. Geopolitical risk means the danger imposed upon the global economy and corporate management due to unexpected uneconomic factors such as political instabilities. Three geopolitical risks dealt with in the paper are turmoils in Libya and Egypt caused by Arab Spring, military tension in Hormuz caused by fortified sanctions on Iran, instability in Iraq caused by IS’s occupation on Northern part of Iraq. If geopolitical instability occurred energy supply would be disrupted because of energy production reduction and logistics setbacks. According to estimation results using Event Study analysis, the geopolitical risks acted as the factor increasing the oil price but the extent of the effect was much less than the expectation of the media or other practical articles. Net change of oil price for 2 months just after the commotions of MENA in 2011 was 5.17%, and those after the conjunctions of Iran in 2012 and Iraq in 2014 were 4.31% and 1.39%, respectively. This result is mainly because the energy supply sources such as U.S. and Russia have been diversified. Therefore low oil price would continue with considerable time even if geopolitical instabilities by IS, etc in the Middle East are kept on.
