Colorimetric H2O2 Detection Using Ag-Nanoparticle-Decorated Silica Microspheres

In view of the importance of convenient and rapid H2O2 detection for biological analysis, we herein propose Ag nanoparticle (NP)-decorated silica microspheres as a probe for instant and non-enzymatic on-site colorimetric detection of H2O2. The surface hydroxyl groups of silica microspheres were reacted with (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane to afford thiolated microspheres that subsequently bind Ag NPs. The oxidation of residual –SH groups on the silica surface to –S–S– moieties in the presence of H2O2 induces the aggregation of decorated microspheres and is accompanied by a color change. Sensor response is found to be proportional to H2O2 concentration in the range from 100 nM to 1 mM, with UV–Vis and colorimetric detection limits determined as 10 -8 M and 10 -5 M, respectively. The developed platform is successfully used to detect H2O2 in simulated human urine and is, therefore, concluded to be sufficiently stable and selective for practical applications.

The marketability of blueberries over long distances has been limited because of their highly perishability. To prolong the postharvest shelf life and conserve quality properties of blueberry, various alternatives have been evaluated. We studied the influence of gum arabic (GA) alone or GA enhanced with African baobab (AB) fruit extract on blueberry during cold storage (4 C) for 21 days. Physico-chemical properties (e.g. pH, color, firmness, and weight loss), microbial decay, antioxidant properties, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) activity were investigated. The fruit treated with GA combined AB indicated a significant delay in microbial decay, firmness loss, weight loss, and color change. The treatments on blueberries resulted in better preservation of total phenols and total anthocyanins delayed the increase in total soluble solids as compared to the control. The coatings lowered the activities of PPO and POD enzymes and delayed microbial decay in coated blueberry during 21 days of storage.

Purpose: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) is a rare genetic autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in ATP8B1, ABCB11 or ABCB4. Mutational analysis of these genes is a reliable approach to identify the disorder. Methods: We collected and analyzed relevant data related to clinical diagnosis, biological investigation, and molecular determination in nine children carrying these gene mutations, who were from unrelated families in South China. Results: Of the nine patients (five males, four females) with PFIC, one case of PFIC1, four cases of PFIC2, and four cases of PFIC3 were diagnosed. Except in patient no. 8, jaundice and severe pruritus were the major clinical signs in all forms. γ-glutamyl transpeptidase was low in patients with PFIC1/PFIC2, and remained mildly elevated in patients with PFIC3. We identified 15 different mutations, including nine novel mutations (p.R470HfsX8, p.Q794X and p.I1170T of ABCB11 gene mutations, p.G319R, p.A1047P, p.G1074R, p.T830NfsX11, p.A1047PfsX8 and p.N1048TfsX of ABCB4 gene mutations) and six known mutations (p.G446R and p.F529del of ATP8B1 gene mutations, p.A588V, p.G1004D and p.R1057X of ABCB11 gene mutations, p.P479L of ABCB4 gene mutations). The results showed that compared with other regions, these three types of PFIC genes had different mutational spectrum in China. Conclusion: The study expands the genotypic spectrum of PFIC. We identified nine novel mutations of PFIC and our findings could help in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.
Cost-Effective Fabrication of Biomorphic Mesoporous Ni-NiO Microtube for Pseudocapacitors

In this paper, a biomorphic mesoporous Ni-NiO microtube was successfully prepared by a facile and cost-effective synthesis strategy using cotton as a biotemplate. The morphology and textural characterization of as-obtained Ni-NiO materials were analyzed by X-ray diffraction patterns, scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption–desorption technology. The results suggested the as-prepared Ni-NiO samples owned uniform micro-tubular morphology and prominent mesoporous structure. Meanwhile, the effect of annealing temperature on morphology and porosity of Ni-NiO was also investigated. The optimal sample, Ni-NiO-4, exhibited a uniform microtube morphology with an ideal mesoporous structure of a high surface area (15.8 m2 g-1) and suitable mesopore size (9.28 nm). Furthermore, these as-obtained Ni-NiO materials showed enhanced electrochemical property as electrodes for pseudocapacitors. Especially, the Ni-NiO-4 electrode displayed the outstanding capacitive performance, including a high specific capacitance of 98.7 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and satisfactory rate capacity. More importantly, Ni-NiO-4 electrode owned an excellently long-term cycling stability.
