Hydrophobic packaging paper with good barrier properties by PVA/AKD dispersion coating

Paper packaging may contribute to environmental protection if this green packaging material can replace nonbiodegradable plastic packaging. Nevertheless, porous paper surface and hygroscopic nature of cellulosic fibers hinder the widespread use of paper packaging. In this study, the excellent film-forming performance of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used to seal the surface pores of paper, and alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) was added to improve the water resistance of paper. Results showed that after PVA/AKD coating hydrophilic base paper changed to hydrophobic one. The water vapor transmission rate of paper decreased sharply when adequate PVA/AKD was applied. Meanwhile, the non-grease resistant base paper converted to a product with the highest grease resistance level. Furthermore, both elongation at break and tensile strength of paper improved markedly after PVA/AKD coating.

A suspension polymerization method was employed to prepare coating cobinder latexes. Suspension polymerized latexes stabilized with anionic polyelectrolytes were used as a coating cobinder, and its effect on the viscosity and water retention value of coating colors was investigated. The effects of suspension-polymerized latexes on coated paper properties including gloss, elongation at break and tensile index were also examined. In addition, the possibility of improving fold cracking resistance of the coated paper with the use of suspension-polymerized latex was investigated. Results showed that suspension-polymerized latexes had a potential of improving coated paper properties and fold cracking resistance. To obtain these benefits, it was suggested that the selection and careful control of the dosage of polyelectrolyte stabilizers should be exercised in the polymerization process.
