Chilled Air System and Size Effect in Micro-milling of Nickel-Titanium Shape Memory Alloys

Although Nickel-Titanium Shape Memory Alloys (NiTi SMAs) are used in a variety of applications due to their shape memory and superelasticity properties, their features of high ductility, temperature sensitivity, and strong work hardening render these materials difficult to machine. The viability of a new approach in improving the machinability through temperature control using chilled air system application was investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to characterise material response to thermal loads. Microstructure phase identification was evaluated with X-ray diffraction. Micro-milling tests were performed using chilled air system and benchmarked to dry cutting and the use of minimum quantity lubricant (MQL). To augment lubrication, chilled air was also applied concurrently with MQL. Results indicated that the application of chilled air reduced cutting temperature and minimised burr height, while their simultaneous application with MQL further improved the machinability. Further investigation was conducted to explore the influence of the ploughing mechanism on machining performance and product quality. The results pointed to higher feed per tooth producing better outcomes. This paper puts forward a new hypothesis that the machinability could be improved by inhibiting or locking in phase transformation through temperature control, and optimising chip thickness, one of the principal parameters of size effect.

In the twenty-first century, transportation services and infrastructure will play a central role in the logistics systems of corporations competing in the global market. As transportation and logistics systems continue to integrate, their impact on the physical environment will become a major issue. This study investigates the antecedents and outcomes of green technology innovation adoption in transportation companies in Malaysia. A questionnaire survey on the green technology innovation adoption of Malaysian transportation companies was conducted, in which 252 samples were analysed. Based on the survey results, this study finds that the quality of human resources, customer pressure, and environmental uncertainty significantly influence green innovation adoption for transportation companies, while the influence of organizational and governmental support is not significant. In addition, the findings of this study indicate that there is a significant relationship between green technology innovation adoption and environmental outcome. The practical implications of the research findings are discussed.
A Method of Discovering Interesting Association Rules from Student Admission Dataset

For the past decades and until now, association rule mining is one of the most prominent research topics in data mining. However, the main challenge among public or private practitioners is to find the interesting rule from data repository. As a result, many efforts have been put forward to explore this rule by applying several methods and interesting measures. Therefore, in this paper, we introduced an enhanced association rule mining method namely Significant Least Pattern Growth (SLP-Growth), where the algorithm embeds with two interesting measures called Critical Relative Support (CRS) and Correlation (Corr). The experiment uses the dataset that contains the records of preferred programs being selected by post-matriculation or post-STPM students of Malaysia via Electronic Management of Admission System (e-MAS) for the year 2008/2009. The experimental results show that the SLP-Algorithm with the embedded measures can successfully in categorizing the association rules. In addition, this information can be used by educators and higher university authority personnel in the university to understand the programs’ patterns being selected by the students. More importantly, it can assist them as a basis to offer more relevant programs to the potential students rather than by chance technique.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The long-term development of a mobile booking taxi application service depends on the continued use of its passengers. The aim of this study is to investigate the determinants of the mobile taxi booking application service’s continuance intention, using the technology continuance theory by including the perceived risk and subjective norms. The data were collected by surveying 387 users of the mobile taxi application service. The data were analysed by applying the partial least squares technique. The analysis showed that the technology continuance theory has extensive power to explain the continuance intention to use the mobile booking taxi application. Subjective norms also have a significant effect on the attitude of mobile booking taxi application users which represents an important contribution to technology continuance theory extension. Distribution of HPV Genotypes in Cervical Cancer in Multiethnic Malaysia

Background: Cervical cancer is the third commonest type of cancer among women in Malaysia. Our aim was to determine the distribution of human papilloma virus (HPV) genotypes in cervical cancer in our multi-ethnic population. Materials and Methods: This was a multicentre study with a total of 280 cases of cervical cancer from 4 referral centres in Malaysia, studied using real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) detection of 12 high risk-HPV genotypes. Results: Overall HPV was detected in 92.5% of cases, in 95.9% of squamous cell carcinomas and 84.3%of adenocarcinomas. The five most prevalent high-risk HPV genotypes were HPV 16 (68.2%), 18 (40%), 58 (10.7%), 33 (10.4%) and 52 (10.4%). Multiple HPV infections were more prevalent (55.7%) than single HPV infections (36.8%). The percentage of HPV positive cases in Chinese, Malays and Indians were 95.5%, 91.9% and 80.0%, respectively. HPV 16 and 18 genotypes were the commonest in all ethnic groups. We found that the percentage of HPV 16 infection was significantly higher in Chinese (75.9%) compared to Malays (63.7%) and Indians (52.0%) (p<0.05), while HPV 18 was significantly higher in Malays (52.6%) compared to Chinese (25.0%) and Indians (28%) (p<0.05). Meanwhile, HPV 33 (17.9%) and 52 (15.2%) were also more commonly detected in the Chinese (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study showed that the distribution of HPV genotype in Malaysia is similar to other Asian countries. Importantly, we found that different ethnic groups in Malaysia have different HPV genotype infection rates, which is a point to consider during the implementation of HPV vaccination.

Reactive oxygen species are known to mediate various pathological conditions associated with malaria. In this study, the antioxidant potential of Clerodendrum violaceum leaf extracts, an indigenous antimalarial remedy, was evaluated. Total phenol, flavonoid, selenium, vitamins C and E contents of Clerodendrum violaceum leaf extracts were determined. The free radical scavenging activities of the extracts against DPPH, superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide coupled with their reducing power were also evaluated in vitro . Moreover, responses of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GR) in a rodent malaria model to a 4-day administration of Clerodendrum violaceum leaf extracts were also evaluated. The methanolic extract was found to contain the highest amounts of antioxidant compounds/element and also demonstrated the highest free radical scavenging activity in vitro . The results showed a significant decrease ( p < 0.05) in SOD and CAT activities with a concurrent significant ( p < 0.05) increase in GPx and GR activities in both erythrocytes and liver of untreated Plasmodium berghei NK65-infected animals compared to the uninfected animals. The extracts were able to significantly increase ( p < 0.05) SOD and CAT activities and significantly reduce ( p < 0.05) GPx and GR activities in both the liver and erythrocytes compared to those observed in the untreated infected animals. The results suggest the augmentation of the antioxidant system as one of the possible mechanisms by which Clerodendrum violaceum extract ameliorates secondary effects of malaria infection, alongside its antiplasmodial effect in subjects.
