Phenotypic and Genetic Parameters for Inosine Acid in Relation to Carcass and Meat Quality Traits in Pigs

        Jiang, X.P.,Liu, G.Q.,Xiong, Y.Z.,Ding, J.T.,Xie, K.Z.,Zhang, J.Q.,Zuo, B. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2003 Animal Bioscience Vol.16 No.2

A total of 135 F2 finishing pigs (65 barrows and 69 gilts) from resource population (Large White${\times}$Meishan) were slaughtered at about 87.8 kg BW. Contents of inosine acid (IMP) and carnine (HR) in muscle were assayed by HLPC and genetic parameters for IMP content and HR content were estimated using full sibs model. There was significant sex effect on IMP content(p<0.05), $3.561{\pm}0.077mg/g$ for gilt and $3.287{\pm}0.085mg/g$ for barrow. Heritability estimates for IMP and HR content were 0.127 and 0.357, respectively. The phenotypic correlation between IMP content and HR was 0.335, pH (A) 0.024, water lose rate (WLR) -0.069, intramuscular fat (IMF) -0.214, average marbling score (MARB) -0.143, average backfat measurements (AVBF) -0.084 and average color value (CV) -0.156, respectively. The result indicated that inosine acid content in meat might be retained or slightly improved by reducing backfat depth in pig breeding.

Effects of Soy Isoflavone on Performance, Meat Quality and Antioxidative Property of Male Broilers Fed Oxidized Fish Oil

        Jiang, S.Q.,Jiang, Z.Y.,Lin, Y.C.,Xi, P.B.,Ma, X.Y. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.8

This study was conducted to determine the effect of dietary soy isoflavone (ISF, 0 and 20 mg/kg) on performance, meat quality and antioxidative property in male broilers. Six replicates of 45 birds (42 d old) were used for each treatment. The birds were fed soybean meal-free diets containing 3% oxidized fish oil (acid value, 6.76 mg potassium hydroxide/g; and peroxide value, 6.18 meq/kg) for 3 wk. The results showed that average daily gain, feed intake, feed conversion and carcass traits were not affected by soy ISF. Compared with the control group, breast muscle color redness value and water holding capacity were increased (p<0.05) by ISF supplementation. The activity of plasma catalase was increased by supplementing with 20 mg ISF/kg diet. In breast muscle, Broilers fed 20 mg ISF/kg had decreased production of malondialdehyde and lactic acid. The ISF supplementation elevated total antioxidative capacity and activities of total superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. The results indicated that dietary ISF could increase redness and water holding capacity of meat, and antioxidative property of meat in male broilers fed oxidized fish oil diet.

STARTING SLIDING MODE VARIABLE STRUCTURE THAT COORDINATES THE CONTROL AND REAL-TIME OPTIMIZATION OF DRY DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSIONS

        Z.-G. ZHAO,J.-L. JIANG,Z.-P. YU,T. ZHANG 한국자동차공학회 2013 International journal of automotive technology Vol.14 No.6

This paper researches the coordination of control between an engine and clutch at the system level to adequately reflect a driver’s intention and improve the starting performance of a vehicle equipped with a dry dual clutch transmission (DCT). Four-degree-of-freedom (DOF) starting dynamic equations are established for a dry DCT with a single intermediate shaft, and a two-DOF model of the sliding friction process and a single-DOF in-gear model of stable operation are obtained after simplifying these equations. Taking advantage of predictive control and a genetic algorithm, target tracing curves of the engine’s speed and the vehicle’s velocity are optimally specified online, and the starting sliding mode variable structure (SMVS) coordinating control strategy is designed to track these curves. The starting performance of a prototype car equipped with a dry DCT is simulated under different starting cases on the MATLAB/Simulink software platform. The simulation results show that the designed SMVS coordinating controller not only embodies driver intention and effectively improves the dry DCT car’s starting performance but is also highly robust when subjected to variations in the vehicle parameters.

The 8th International Comparison of Absolute Gravimeters 2009: the first Key Comparison (CCM.G-K1) in the field of absolute gravimetry

        Jiang, Z,,linká,š,, V,Arias, F E,Liard, J,Merlet, S,Wilmes, H,Vitushkin, L,Robertsson, L,Tisserand, L,Pereira Dos Santos, F,Bodart, Q,Falk, R,Baumann, H,Mizushima, S,,kinen, J Springer-Verlag 2012 METROLOGIA -BERLIN- Vol.49 No.6

The 8th International Comparison of Absolute Gravimeters (ICAG2009) took place at the headquarters of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) from September to October 2009. It was the first ICAG organized as a key comparison in the framework of the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM MRA) (CIPM 1999). ICAG2009 was composed of a Key Comparison (KC) as defined by the CIPM MRA, organized by the Consultative Committee for Mass and Related Quantities (CCM) and designated as CCM.G-K1. Participating gravimeters and their operators came from national metrology institutes (NMIs) or their designated institutes (DIs) as defined by the CIPM MRA. A Pilot Study (PS) was run in parallel in order to include gravimeters and their operators from other institutes which, while not signatories of the CIPM MRA, nevertheless play important roles in international gravimetry measurements. The aim of the CIPM MRA is to have international acceptance of the measurement capabilities of the participating institutes in various fields of metrology. The results of CCM.G-K1 thus constitute an accurate and consistent gravity reference traceable to the SI (International System of Units), which can be used as the global basis for geodetic, geophysical and metrological observations of gravity. The measurements performed afterwards by the KC participants can be referred to the international metrological reference, i.e. they are SI-traceable.

The ICAG2009 was complemented by a number of associated measurements: the Relative Gravity Campaign (RGC2009), high-precision levelling and an accurate gravity survey in support of the BIPM watt balance project. The major measurements took place at the BIPM between July and October 2009. Altogether 24 institutes with 22 absolute gravimeters (one of the 22 AGs was ultimately withdrawn) and nine relative gravimeters participated in the ICAG/RGC campaign.

This paper is focused on the absolute gravity campaign. We review the history of the ICAGs and present the organization, data processing and the final results of the ICAG2009.

After almost thirty years of hosting eight successive ICAGs, the CIPM decided to transfer the responsibility for piloting the future ICAGs to NMIs, although maintaining a supervisory role through its Consultative Committee for Mass and Related Quantities.

        Spectral line-by-line pulse shaping.

        Jiang, Z,Seo, D S,Leaird, D E,Weiner, A M Optical Society of America 2005 Optics letters Vol.30 No.12

We experimentally demonstrate pulse-shaping experiments in which the individual spectral lines that are present in the output of a mode-locked laser (8.5 GHz mode spacing, centered at 1542 nm) are resolved. The shaped pulses overlap in time, and this leads to a new way to observe fluctuations of the comb-offset frequency in the time domain.

Effects of Feeding Purified Zearalenone Contaminated Diets with or without Clay Enterosorbent on Growth, Nutrient Availability, and Genital Organs in Post-weaning Female Pigs

        Jiang, S.Z.,Yang, Z.B.,Yang, W.R.,Yao, B.Q.,Zhao, H.,Liu, F.X.,Chen, C.C.,Chi, F. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2010 Animal Bioscience Vol.23 No.1

The effects of different levels of natural clay enterosorbent on the growth, nutrient availability, and genital organs of post-weaning female pigs fed with an addition of zearalenone (ZEA) were investigated in the study. A total of thirty-five post-weaning gilts ($L{\times}Y{\times}D$) with an average body weight of 12.36${\pm}$1.46 kg were used in the test. The gilts were raised individually in metabolism cages and fed a corn-soybean meal-whey basal diet with an addition of 0 or 1 mg/kg of ZEA for 24 d with four levels of natural clay enterosorbent added in the feed. The treatments were: i) control; ii) control+2.5 g/kg clay; iii) control+1 mg/kg ZEA; iv) control+1 mg/kg ZEA+1.25 g/kg clay; v) control+1 mg/kg ZEA+2.5 g/kg clay; vi) control+1 mg/kg ZEA+5.0 g/kg clay; vii) control+1 mg/kg ZEA +10 g/kg clay. Pigs fed diets contaminated with additional purified ZEA had significantly reduced apparent digestibility of crude protein (CP), gross energy (GE) and apparent metabolic rate of GE (ME/GE, p<0.05) without changes of net protein utilization (NPU, p>0.05). Final body weight, average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), vulva length, vulva width, vulva area, relative weights of genital organ and proliferative changes of the ovary tissues in gilts fed ZEA-contaminated diet were increased (p<0.05) compared to the gilts fed the control diet. Addition of natural clay enterosorbent in the ZEA-contaminated diet showed a positive protection effect on ZEA feeding, and the protection was increased linearly or quadratically as clay content increased. However, in pigs fed a diet with clay alone at 2.5 g/kg level there was no significant impact (p>0.05) on all the parameters as compared to the control. It is suggested that feeding ZEA at about 1.0 mg/kg for 24 days might result in a deleterious effect in pigs, and addition of 5 or 10 g clay enterosorbent per kg diet can effectively neutralize the detrimental effects of the ZEA feeding.

Effect of Genistein on Antioxidative Defence System and Membrane Fluidity in Chick Skeletal Muscle Cells

        Jiang, Z.Y.,Jiang, S.Q.,Lin, Y.C.,Ma, X.Y.,Xi, P.B.,Cao, T.,Wang, X.Q. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2008 Animal Bioscience Vol.21 No.8

This study was conducted to investigate the protective effect of genistein on the antioxidative defence system and membrane fluidity in chick skeletal muscle cells after supplementation with 0, 20, 40, and $80{\mu}mol/L$ genistein in $50{\mu}mol/L$ $FeSO_4/H_2O_2$ treated cells for 24 h. Genistein supplementation recovered the decreased activity of total superoxide dismutase induced by $FeSO_4/H_2O_2$, significantly increased glutathione peroxidase activity (p<0.05) and decreased malondialdehyde production (p<0.05). The treatment of 80 mol/L genistein in $FeSO_4/H_2O_2$ treated cells decreased the secretion of creatine kinase (p<0.05). Fluorescence polarization values and microviscosities observed with $FeSO_4/H_2O_2$ treated cells were significantly higher than those observed with no $FeSO_4/H_2O_2$ treated cells. The addition of $80{\mu}mol/L$ genistein improved the increased fluorescence polarization value (p<0.05) caused by $FeSO_4/H_2O_2$ treatment. The microviscosity value was significantly decreased by adding genistein (p<0.05). In conclusion, genistein protected skeletal muscle cells from oxidative damage by improving antioxidative status and membrane fluidity.

Effects of Alfalfa Meal on Growth Performance and Gastrointestinal Tract Development of Growing Ducks

        Jiang, J.F.,Song, X.M.,Huang, X.,Zhou, W.D.,Wu, J.L.,Zhu, Z.G.,Zheng, H.C.,Jiang, Y.Q. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2012 Animal Bioscience Vol.25 No.10

A study was conducted to evaluate effects of alfalfa meal on growth performance and gastrointestinal tract development of growing layer ducks to provide evidence for application of alfalfa meal in the duck industry. Two hundred and fifty-six healthy Shaoxing 7-wk old growing layer ducks were selected and randomly allocated to 1 of 4 dietary treatments based on corn and soybean meal and containing 0, 3, 6, and 9% of alfalfa meal for 8 wks. Each treatment consisted of 4 replicates of 16 ducks each. Briefly, birds were raised in separate compartments, and each compartment consisted of three parts: indoor floor house, adjacent open area and a connecting water area. The results showed: i) Growing ducks fed alfalfa meal diet were not significantly different in average daily gain, feed intake and gain-to-feed ratio from those fed no alfalfa diet (p>0.05). ii) Alfalfa meal increased the ratio crop, gizzard to live weight, caecum to live weight, the caecum index of growing ducks (p<0.05). iii) Villus height in duodenum and jejunum of growing ducks increased significantly with the increase of alfalfa meal levels (p<0.05). Crypt depth in duodenum and jejunum of growing ducks decreased significantly with the increase of alfalfa meal levels (p<0.05). This experiment showed that feeding of alfalfa meal to growing layer ducks could improve gastrointestinal tract growth and small intestinal morphology without effect on performance. This experiment provides evidence that alfalfa meal is a very valuable feedstuff for growing layer ducks.
