An Efficient Acoustic Distance Rendering Algorithm for Proximity Control in Virtual Reality Systems
BAEK, Yonghyun,LEE, Tegyu,PARK, Young-cheol 'Institute of Electronics, Information and Communi 2017 IEICE transactions on fundamentals of electronics, Vol.ea100 No.12

In this letter, we propose an acoustic distance rendering (ADR) algorithm that can efficiently create the proximity effect in virtual reality (VR) systems. By observing the variation of acoustic cues caused by the movement of the sound source in the near field, we develop a model that can closely approximates the near-field transfer function (NFTF). The developed model is used to efficiently compensate for the near-field effect on the head related transfer function (HRTF). The proposed algorithm is implemented and tested in the form of an audio plugin for a VR platform and the test results confirm the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Stereo upmix-based binaural auralization for mobile devices
Taegyu Lee,Yonghyun Baek,Young-cheol Park,Dae Youn IEEE 2014 IEEE transactions on consumer electronics Vol.60 No.3

This paper presents a new binaural auralization algorithm suitable for mobile devices. A stereo-tomultichannel virtual upmix technique was utilized to expand the spatial dimension of stereo audio to a multichannel speaker space. In order to enhance subjective preferences and listener envelopment, reflections of the primary sound component were artificially generated by modeling a virtual ceiling and sidewalls based on concert hall acoustics. The uncorrelated ambient components were then distributed over spatial points at different azimuth and elevation angles. Computational efficiency was achieved by removing the redundant operations in each stage of the algorithm. Subjective tests were performed, and the results showed that the proposed algorithm significantly improves spatial perceptions of stereo audio being played over headphones.

This brief presents a nonlinear acoustic echo cancellation algorithm comprising a postprocessor that can model the saturation-type nonlinear distortion of a microphone circuit. To support fast adaptation to the acoustic echo environment, the linear filter is adapted using an affine projection algorithm where the reference input vectors subject to linear operation are dynamically selected to update the coefficient vector. We consider the hard-clipper and sigmoid functions for the postprocessor, and their parameters are adaptively updated using the least-mean-square algorithm. The simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm achieves fast and stable convergence under saturation-type microphone distortion, and it can have better performance than conventional algorithms.

최재성(Jaesung Choi),백용현(Yonghyun Baek),오현오(Henney Oh) 한국HCI학회 2016 한국HCI학회 학술대회 Vol.2016 No.1
For audio player application, we detect whether a headphone is worn on one’s ear by using a signal processing method alone without any additional hardware. Proposed algorithm determines closed air conduction path between a headphone speaker output and a microphone input.
