      • Photochemical and magnetic activities of FeTiO<sub>3</sub> nanoparticles by electro-spinning synthesis

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ilmenite FeTiO<SUB>3</SUB> nanoparticles were prepared by electrospinning synthesis using the sol–gel precursors, followed by the sintering at 650°C. The pure crystalline phase was verified by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurements together with Rietveld refinements. The surface properties of the nanoparticles were studied by TEM, SEM, BET and XPS measurements. The optical absorption of FeTiO<SUB>3</SUB> nanoparticles is in the visible wavelength region. The indirect allowed band gap (2.6eV) of FeTiO<SUB>3</SUB> shows the characteristic charge-transfer (CT) transitions of O-2p→(Ti/Fe)-3d in visible light wavelength region. The photochemical properties were investigated by the methylene blue (MB) degradation under the irradiation of visible-light. FeTiO<SUB>3</SUB> nanoparticles were efficient in the photo-degradation of MB dye solutions. The photocatalysis activities and mechanisms were discussed on the crystal structure characteristics such as multivalent elements of Ti<SUP>3+</SUP>, Fe<SUP>3+</SUP>/Fe<SUP>2+</SUP> redox couples.         Electronic structure and optical properties of V-doped Bi<sub>4</sub>Ti<sub>3</sub>O<sub>12</sub> nanoparticles

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Pure and V<SUP>5+</SUP>-doped Bi<SUB>4</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>12</SUB> (BTO) photocatalysts were prepared by sol–gel routine and subsequent hydrothermal synthesis. The samples were developed into the platelike microparticles with the exposed (001) facets. The crystalline phases were verified via the XRD measurement. The surface characteristics of the photocatalysts were studied by TEM, SEM, BET, EDX and XPS measurements. The UV–vis optical absorption spectra showed that the V-doped photocatalysts exhibit an obvious red shift in the visible light absorption band compared with the pure BTO. Rhodamine B (RhB) dye solution was used as the model organic pollutants to verify the influence of V-doping on the photocatalytic activity. The 10 mol % V-doped BTO showed efficient photocatalytic ability. The photocatalytic activities and mechanisms were discussed on the crystal structure characteristics and the measurements such as EES and XPS results.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> V-doped Bi<SUB>4</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>12</SUB> has been synthesized by sol-gel hydrothermal process. </LI> <LI> Single-crystal micro-plates with exposed {001} facets are reached. </LI> <LI> Visible light absorption in Bi<SUB>4</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>12</SUB> can be greatly improved by V-doping. </LI> <LI> V-doped Bi<SUB>4</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>12</SUB> gives better visible light photoactivity. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • An Integrated Approach of Real-time Hand Gesture Recognition Based on Feature Points

        Hand Gesture recognition systems enable people to interact with digital systems naturally. Due to the spread of body motion capture device, depth information is available for getting more delicate and effective gesture recognition results. However, due to the limitation of devices such as Microsoft Kinect, it is still very difficult to obtain hand gesture information in rela-time. This paper proposes an integrated approach of real-time hand gesture recognition based on feature points. It explains our solutions for hand segmentation and feature points abstraction based on real-time motion captured images. Having been tested with a series of applications, our method is proved to be robust and effective, and suitable for further extension in real-time hand gesture recognition systems.

        Selection of Potential Virulence Factors Contributing to Streptococcus suis Serotype 2 Penetration into the Blood-Brain Barrier in an In Vitro Co-Culture Model

        Meningitis caused by Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (S. suis 2) is a great threat to the pig industry and human health. Virulence factors associated with the pathogenesis of meningitis have yet to be clearly defined, even though many potential S. suis 2 virulence factors have been identified. This greatly hinders the progress of S. suis 2 meningitis pathogenesis research. In this study, a co-culture blood-brain barrier (BBB) model was established using primary porcine brain microvascular endothelial cells and astrocytes, and the whole genome library of S. suis 2 was constructed using phage display technology. Finally, a total of 14 potential virulence factors contributing to S. suis 2 adherence to and invasion of the BBB were selected by analyzing the interactions between the phage library and the co-culture model. Twelve of these factors have not been previously reported in meningitis-related research. The data provide valuable insight into the pathogenesis of S. suis 2 meningitis and potential targets for the development of drug therapies.

        The Prognostic Significance of Notch1 and Fatty Acid Binding Protein 7 (FABP7) Expression in Resected Tracheobronchial Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma: A Multicenter Retrospective Study

        Purpose Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the trachea and bronchus is a rare tumor. Although MYBNFIB oncogene fusion and Notch1 mutation have been identified in ACC, little is known about the expression and clinical significance of Notch1 and its target gene fatty acid binding protein 7 (FABP7) in tracheobronchial ACC. Materials and Methods Primary tracheobronchial ACC that were resected between 1998 and 2014 were identified through the pathology and oncology database from five thoracic oncology centers in China. A tissue array was constructed from the patients’ samples and the expressions of Notch1 and FABP7 were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. The association between the expression of both markers and survival was determined. Results Overexpression of Notch1 and FABP7, detected in 37.8% and 38.3% of 368 patients with tracheobronchial ACC, respectively, was an independent prognostic indicator for recurrencefree survival (RFS) by multivariable Cox proportional hazard model (p=0.032 and p=0.048, respectively). Overexpression of Notch1, but not of FABP7, predicted overall survival (OS) (p=0.018). When categorized into four groups according to coexpression of Notch1 and FABP7, patients with overexpression of both Notch1 and FABP7 belonged to the group with the shortest RFS and OS (p=0.01 and p=0.048, respectively). Conclusion Expression of Notch1 and FABP7, and coexpression of Notch1 and FABP7, is strongly associated with poor survival in resected tracheobronchial ACC. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that poor differentiation of tracheobronchial ACC correlates with the activation of Notch signaling.
