The plant of Pedicularis resupinata L.var. oppositifolia (Scrophulariaceae) appeared to be used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, malignant abscess (tumor), urolith, and diuretics in oriental medicinal literatures. Three different compounds were isolated from the aerial part of the plant and characterized by the spectroscopic (UV, IR, NMR, MS) analysis. These compounds were acteoside (compound I), suavissmoside R1 (compound II), and D-mannitol (compound III).

From the rhizome of Atractylodes japonica Koidzumi (Compositae) which is the original plant of oriental medicine Cang-Zhu, four essential oil compounds were isolated. Three of them were identified as atractylon, hydroxyatrac tylon and 5αH, 10β-selina-4(14), 7(11)-dine-8-one, which were already known as the constitutents of Atractylodes Rhixoma. The fourth is a novel polyacetylene type compound, and the structure is postulated as 1, 4-diacetoxytetradeca-6, 12-diene-8, 10-diyne by the spectral data.
Biological Activities of the Root of Cichorium intybus

Several biological activities of extracts from roots of Cichorium intybus Linne (Compositae) were studied in this paper. The antiinflammatory activity of the methanol extract of this root was investigated against carrageenin induced edema in rat`s hind paw. Significant inhibitory effects were observed at the dose of 1,000 ㎎/㎏ and were compared with aspirin as a control. The hepatoprotective activities of the methanol extract, ethylacetate and butanol fraction were studied on mice whose livers are damaged by CCl₄. The serum transaminase activities (ALT, AST) were reduced at the dose of 1,000 ㎎/㎏ of the methanol extract, 500 ㎎/㎏ of ethylacetate and butanol fraction, respectively. The bile juice secretion was also increased significantly from each fraction. The antidiabetic activity was examined on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats with methanol extract. Methanol extract gave a significant reduction of blood glucose levels in 1 week and 3 weeks.

Verbascoside has inhibition activity on carrageenan induced edema in rat paw, enhancement of bile juice secretion, and hepatoprotective activity. The hepatoprotective functions were improved on serumtransaminase activities (s-GPT and s-GOT), liver weight, and even sleeping time in mice treated with verbascoside. In addtion, the mice toxicated with carbon tetrachloride are signiflcantly recovered by the administration of verbascoside. This is the first report shown their biological activity of verbascoside.

The intestinal microbiota are important to the host with regard to resistance they impart against bacterial infections and their involvement in mediating metabolic functions. Lactic acid producing bacteria such as Lactobacillus play an important physiological role in these matters. The aim of the present study was to isolate Lactobacillus sp. that inhibits enteric pathogens. Initially, 17 isolates from healthy Koreans were collected on Lactobacillus selective medium. Resistance of the isolates to antibiotics including rifampicin, streptomycin, clindamycin and vancomycin was measured. One of the isolate was identified as Lactobacillus ruminus on the basis of bacterial cell morphology, cultural characteristic and biochemical characteristics, 16S rRNA sequence analysis and PCR-RAPD. Antimicrobial activity of the bacterium against Vancomycin Intermediate Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE) was measured. About $10^4$ cells of VISA or VRE were mixed with 1, 5, and 9 mL of L. ruminus SPM 0211 and the final volume was adjusted to 10 mL with brain heart infusion (BHI) broth. The cell suspension was incubated for 3, 6, 9, and 24 h, serially diluted and then plated on BHI agar plates. As numbers of L. ruminus SPM 0211 were increased, viable cell count of VISA and VRE decreased. The strongest antimicrobial activity of SPM 0211 was observed after 9 h incubation in any mixture, almost completely inhibiting the growth of these two bacteria. The results suggest that the freshly isolated L. ruminus SPM 0211 may be used as a pro-biotic microbe that prevents the colonization of enteric pathogens and can thereby promote good gastrointestinal health.

This study is concerned with some general pharmacological activities. It was observed that the methanol extract of the aerial part of this plant showed some effects on acute toxicity, carrageenin induced edema in rat paw, bile juice secretion and antibacterial effect. From this result it was obtained that the methanol extract revealed the antiinflammatory activity and bile juice secretion increasing effect. Thus, it was fractionated and buthanol fraction has obvious inhibition effect on edema and bile juice secretion increasing effect. The total extract showed low acute toxicity i.e., the minimum lethal dose was more than 8000mg/kg in oral administration in mice.
