        One-Pot Synthesis of α-Fe2O3 Nanospindles as High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

        Hematite nanospindles with a uniform size of ~270 nm in length and ~90 nm in width are prepared using a facile one-step hydrothermal method. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) serves as a structure-directing agent to control the primary morphology and aggregations. When evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the electrode of sodium alginate (SA) binder exhibits a much better electrochemical performance than that with the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder. Remarkably, the electrode using SA binder can deliver a high reversible specific capacity of 979mAh · g -1 after 50 cycles and prominent rate capability. The microstructural evolution of the nanospindles after the electrochemical cycling is investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Our results may provide important mechanistic insights for the design of nanostructured anode materials for LIBs.

      • Topology-driven trend analysis for drug discovery

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The primary goal of the present study is to discover new drug treatments by topology analysis of drug associations and their therapeutic group network. To this end, we collected 19,869 papers dated from 1946 to 2015 that are related to autism treatment from PubMed. We extracted 145 drugs based on MeSH terms and their synonyms (the total number is 6624) within the same ATC classification hierarchy and used them to find drug associations in the collected datasets. We introduced a new topology-driven method that incorporates various network analyses including co-word network, clique percolation, weak component, pathfinding-based analysis of therapeutic groups, and detection of important drug interaction within a clique. The present study showed that the in-depth analysis of the drug relationships extracted from the literature-based network sheds new light on drug discovery research. The results also suggested that certain drugs could be repurposed for autism treatment in the future. In particular, the results indicated that the discovered four drugs such as Tocilizumab, Tacrolimus, Prednisone, and Sulfisoxazole are worthy of further study in laboratory experiments with formal assessment of possible effects on symptoms, which may provide psychologists, physicians, and researchers with data-based scientific hypotheses in autism-drug discovery.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We propose topology analysis to identify new relationships among therapeutic groups of drugs. </LI> <LI> The proposed approach also helps discover new drug for autism treatment. </LI> <LI> The results suggest that certain drugs could be repurposed for autism treatment in the future. </LI> <LI> The present study sheds new light on drug discovery research. </LI> </UL> </P>

        A facile, green synthesis of biomass carbon dots coupled with molecularly imprinted polymers for highly selective detection of oxytetracycline

        Biomass carbon dots (CDs) prepared by sweet potato peels were superior fluorophores with low toxicity and excellent photostability. A novel designed fluorescence probe for specific recognition and sensitive detection of oxytetracycline (OTC) was fabricated with CDs and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). The quenching of CDs happened when rebinding with OTC due to electron-transfer-induced fluorescence quenching mechanism. The fluorescence probe was successfully applied in honey with the recoveries ranging from 90.2% to 97.3%. The detection limit of OTC was 15.3 ng mL−1. This work provides promising perspectives that the development of fluorescent MIP will be valuable for rapid analysis in complex samples.

        Molecularly imprinted electrospun nanofibre membrane assisted stir bar sorptive extraction for trace analysis of sulfonamides from animal feeds

        The widespread addition of sulfa antibiotics in feeds has long been an environment safety issue. Therefore, it is quite meaningful to constantly propose better solutions for determining the sulfaantibiotics in the environment. Herein, molecularly imprinted electrospun nanofibre membrane (MIM)assisted stir bar sorptive extraction method for the determination sulfonamides (SAs) in feed wasdeveloped. In this study, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) werefirstly prepared via emulsionpolymerization using sulfamonomethoxine as template. Then, the morphology-controllable MIM wasobtained with MIPs-doping electro-spinning solution using electro-spinning technique. Next, MIM arecoated on the magnetic stir bar by heat-sealing. Finally, MIM coated stir bar was used for selectiveenrichment of SAs. The obtained MIM exhibited excellent class selectivity towards SAs (the selectivityfactor β is 2.3–2.7). The MIM coated stir bar can be directly applied to extract SAs from feed samples. Under the optimum extraction conditions, the detection limit of the method could reach 1.5 3.4 ng/g. And satisfactory recoveries ranging from 80 6% to 89 7% were achieved under all three spiked levelsfor determination of four SAs infive different feed samples. The present work not only offers insights todevelop magnetic stir bar using imprinted membrane, but also provides a new method for SAs extraction.

        Sensitive detection of levofloxacin and copper (II) based on fluorescence ‘‘turn on-off” of biomass carbonized polymer dots

        A novel type of biomass carbonized polymer dots (CS-CPDs) with green fluorescence emission were synthesizedvia a one-step microwave-assisted method, using chitosan and maleic acid as the precursors. The fluorescence intensity of CS-CPDs was selectively enhanced (turn on) with increasing levofloxacin(LEV) concentration based on Aggregation Induced Emission Enhancement. The linear range of thismethod was 1–35 lmol/L, with the limit of detection of 0.20 lmol/L. Furthermore, we demonstrated thatthe fluorescence intensity of CS-CPDs/LEV was restored (turn on-off) due to the addition of copper (II),which could assemble a more stable Cu2+/LEV complex through coordination. For the first time, CSCPDswere utilized as a selective fluorescent ‘‘turn on-off” probe for the continuous detection of LEVand Cu2+. Excellent results were also obtained in environmental water samples analysis with recoveriesranging of 91.3–99.6% and 97.7–113.4%, respectively. Moreover, the prepared CS-CPDs exhibited excellentoptical stability and large Stokes shift (139 nm), which predicted broad application prospects inthe field of fluorescence sensing.
