CRYSTAL GROWTH OF HIGH SILICA ZSM -5 AT LOW TEMPERATURE SYNTHESIS CONDITIONS

At the temperature of 90℃ and under atmospheric pressure, growth kinetics of high silica ZSM-5 was investigated through a long induction, nucleation and crystal growth periods. It was found the entire crystallization mechanism of ZSM-5 seems to be the combined process of the nucleation via solid-solid transformation, intergrowth among seed crystals and the normal growth in the reaction mixture. Nuclei were initially formed on the Si-rich surface of the amorphous intermediates, indicating that the reaction of TPA with Si species was prior to that with Al species. As the reaction time proceeded, various types of intergrowth among the seed crystals were observed along with the crystals growing independently. The intergrowth seems to play a role for forming typical ZSM-5 crystal shapes. And then ZSM-5 crystals further grew in the reaction mixture, so that the bulk Si/Al₂ ratio of crystals approached that of the initial reaction mixture.

Familial Pancreatic Cancer and Surveillance of High-Risk Individuals

Family history of pancreatic cancer (PC) is a risk factor for PC development, and the risk level correlates with the number of affected families. A case of PC with ≥1 PC cases in the first-degree relative is broadly defined as familial pancreatic cancer (FPC) and accounts for 5% to 10% of total PC cases. FPC possesses several epidemiological, genetic and clinicopathological aspects that are distinct from those of conventional PCs. In Western countries, FPC registries have been established since the 1990s, and high-risk individuals are screened to detect early PCs. For the pharmacotherapy of FPC, especially in cases with germline pathogenic BRCA mutations, regimens using platinum and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor have recently been studied for their effectiveness. To date, the concept of FPC has prevailed in Western countries, and it has begun to infiltrate into Eastern countries. As the genetic background and environmental conditions vary in association with ethnicity and living area, we need to establish our own FPC registries and accumulate data in Asian countries.
High efficiency ester condensation using hydrophobic zeolite membranes

We successfully developed zeolite membranes with hydrophilic character, by choosing appropriate zeolites in terms of hydrophilicity and high acid tolerance. We evaluated thus developed membranes by their pervaporation (PV) performance, dehydration from acidic organic solvent. The zeolite membranes we developed, based on merlinoite (MER), chabazite (CHA) or phillipsite (PHI), are shown to exhibit stable dehydration performance, respectively. We successfully applied the membranes to the selective removal of water in an ester condensation reaction starting from a stoichiometric mixture of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. The availability of pervaporation-assisted ester condensation reaction was validated by various kinds of combinations of carboxylic acid and alcohols, which implies the general availability of pervaporation-assisted process intensification by zeolite membranes.
