        Synthesis of sulfonated catalyst from bituminous coal to catalyze esterification for biodiesel production with promoted mechanism analysis

        The carbon-based heterogeneous acid catalyst is synthesized from bituminous coal through the partialcarbonization and sulfonation method and applied to catalyze the esterification of oleic acid withmethanol for biodiesel production. Various characterization methods are used to explain catalyticfeatures and molecular simulation is conducted to analyze the promoted mechanism of acid catalyst inesterification. Carbon catalyst, prepared by partially carbonized at 350 C and sulfonated at 105 C,catalyzes esterification with biodiesel yield of 98.70%. Transition state analysis implies that acid catalystreduces the activation energy through providing proton to promote esterification.

        A novel planar motion generation method based on the synthesis of planetary gear train with noncircular gears

        Four-bar linkage has been used in motion generation synthesis for a long time, but there are inevitably some shortcomings such as order defects and poor design flexibility. In this work, a planetary gear train with noncircular gears is proposed to realize planar motion generation synthesis. Compared with the four-bar linkage, it has the advantages of a compact structure, full rotatability, and flexible design. The planetary gear train with noncircular gears is composed of two interrelated parts: a two-stage noncircular gear pair and the RR dyad. The synthesis method is divided mainly into three steps: First, the constraint equation of RR dyad for planar motion generation is established, and a solution region of the double revolute joint (RR) dyads is calculated by kinematic mapping theory. Second, after the full rotatability identification of RR dyads and the determination of each transmission ratio, the centrodes of two-stage noncircular gear pairs, which correspond to the specific RR dyad, are obtained. Finally, the planetary gear train with noncir-cular gears is established to pass the given poses. This method has a universal significance and can be applied to many practical cases.

        Hybrid Double Direction Blocking Sub-Module for MMC-HVDC Design and Control

        Dealing with the DC link fault poses a technical problem for an HVDC based on a modular multilevel converter. The fault suppressing mechanisms of several sub-module topologies with DC fault current blocking capacity are examined in this paper. An improved half-bridge sub-module topology with double direction control switch is also designed to address the additional power consumption problem, and a sub-module topology called hybrid double direction blocking sub module (HDDBSM) is proposed. The DC fault suppression characteristics and sub-module capacitor voltage balance problem is also analyzed, and a self-startup method is designed according to the number of capacitors. The simulation model in PSCAD/EMTDC is built to verify the self-startup process and the DC link fault suppression features.

        Effects of mating on ovarian development and oviposition of Apolygus lucorum

        The polyphagous mirid bug Apolygus lucorum (Hemiptera: Miridae) is an important pest of cotton and other crops in China. It would be useful to examine the reproductive biology of A. lucorum for the development of management strategies. In this study, the effect of mating on ovarian development, egg maturation, and oviposition of A. lucorum was investigated. The results showed that mating could induce ovary development and oviposition. During the preoviposition period (< 7 days after emergence), mated females had more follicles than did virgin females at both the vitellogenic and mature stages. The length of the longest ovariole and extent of ovarian development in mated females were also significantly higher than in virgin females. During oviposition, mated females laid more eggs than virgin females, whereas virgin females had more mature follicles than the mated females did. Twenty days after emergence (an old age for this species), the ovaries of mated females had begun to shrink and enter senescence phases, while the ovaries of virgin females still contained 3–5 follicles in each ovariole and remained plump. The results indicate that mating accelerated ovarian development and reproduction of A. lucorum.

        Complete mitochondrial genome of the darkling beetle Gonocephalum outreyi (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) with phylogenetic implications

        The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Gonocephalum outreyi was determined by using nextgeneration sequencing approach. The full length of this mitogenome is 15,836 bp, which consists of 37 typical metazoan mitochondrial genes with an identical genome organization to ancestral insects. The majority of the protein-coding genes begin with the codon ATN, except for cox1 and cox2 with AAT and AAA, respectively. To elucidate the phylogenetic position of G. outreyi, we used various sequence coding schemes for protein-coding genes and the combined nucleotide sequences of all mitochondrial genes for tree building under the Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood inferences. The phylogenetic results consistently supported G. outreyi as a member of the family Tenebrionidae. The monophyly of both Tenebrionoidea and Tenebrionidae were strongly supported. The Scraptiidae and Melandryidae were recovered to be non-monophyletic in regards to the Osphya. Within Tenebrionidae, the subfamilies Diaperinae and Tenebrioninae were found to be non-monophyletic.
