Vol.31 No.5

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate major factors influencing adoption of smartphone to promote its use by older adults. Background: Despite increasing proportion of elderly people and elderly market, the proportion of elderly smartphone user is still relatively small compared to whole smartphone users. Thus, we need to find out major factors influencing adoption of smartphone to increase proportion of elderly smartphone users. Method: Seven major factors were extracted from 36 survey questions using factor analysis. Regression analysis was also applied to determine specific factors affecting intention of use based on user versus non-user of smartphone, age, gender, and educational background. Results: As results of factor analysis and regression analysis, major factors influencing adoption of smartphone for elderly users were significantly different according to gender, age, educational background based on smartphone users or non-users. Conclusion: The result of this study identified major factors influencing adoption of smartphone for the elderly and provided basic information related to adoption of smartphone according to elderly people"s characteristics. Consequently, we can expect to reduce the information gap and to improve quality of life for the elderly. Application: The development and marketing strategy could be applied differently based on the factors influencing adoption of smartphone. It is also possible to develop a prediction model for smartphone adoption according to elderly users" characteristics.

      • Development of Emotion Recovery System for Preventing Cumulative Psychological Stress of Emotional Workers

Vol.2017 No.4

Objective: This study suggested emotion recovery system for recovering positive emotion of emotional workers without self-effort and verified effectiveness of the emotion recovery system. Background: As the proportion of the service industries and emotional workers increases, the seriousness of the psychological stress of the emotional workers has been raised and policies and studies are being carried out to prevent work-related psychological disease. Therefore, emotion recovery system was proposed for relieving cumulative psychological stress of emotional workers that can be caused by occupational diseases. Method: The system was designed to provide positive visual and auditory stimuli in order to recover positive emotion for emotional workers. Physiological signal (EEG, GSR, and SKT) of 20 subjects were measured to verify effectiveness of the system. Results: After using the emotion recovery system, the subjects’ emotions showed statistically significant positive changes through both subjective and objective evaluations. The results of this study were verified by the effectiveness of the system for inducing positive emotions and reducing negative emotions. Conclusion: Emotion recovery system can minimize the cumulative psychological stress by changing the emotional workers’ negative emotions to positive emotions. Application: The system is expected to be applicable to various environments (driving, customer-facing tasks, telephone services, etc.) where negative emotions can be easily induced from external stimuli.

      • Application of Well-balanced Work Scheduling for Prevention of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders in an Automotive Parts Assembly Line

Vol.2014 No.5

Well-balanced work scheduling was developed and applied for preventing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) in an automotive parts assembly line. In general, workers are shifted 4 or 5 times a day regularly, but there is no reasonable way to determine work order considering workers’ physical stress. To provide work order reasonably, it should be avoided to concentrate physical stress on a specific body part continuously. Therefore, a coefficient of cumulative workload of a station (CCWS) was elicited by sum of multiplying frequency of physical stress on specific body parts and relative weighted value of each body parts. For this study, customized checklists were proposed by using items from various international safety and health-related organizations according to job demand and workplace conditions. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was also applied to carry out to get relative weighted values of each body parts using pairwise comparison depending on tasks. Consequently, combination of work order was determined by summing each CCWS of various work stations based on severity of physical stress during a single day; and rotation cycle (i.e., days) was determined by numbers of worker. For verifying this methodology, a case study was carried out through the example of an automotive parts assembly line with 10 different kinds of assembly work stations connected by a conveyor system and participating 12 female workers. AHP was carried out by 9 experts to get relative weighted values. In this case study, a software tool of well-balanced work scheduling was developed using JAVA 2.7 for convenience and time-saving. By using this tool, the task manager(s) of the manufacturer will be able to generate work schedules very easily and quickly as well as reasonably, just by inputting the frequency of physical stress on a specific body part and relative weighted values derived by expert evaluation for each body parts. The result of this study may help workers have higher satisfaction in shifting work because they were provided well-balanced work scheduling based on their severity of physical stress, which leads to prevent WMSDs. Higher productivity is also expected because of improved workers’ satisfaction and safety.

Vol.20 No.3

The current research is aimed at providing the preliminary information in applying universal design to the Korean Housing Systems. The report was performed through extensive literature survey. The detailed issues include the relevant laws and administration regulations of Korea and US in universal design. Subsequently, the case studies in US are also included for the report Up to now, the relevant laws and administration regulations in UD were compared and the detailed applications were discussed. First of all, the laws for handicapped people was investigated as a relevant law of UD. In Korea, the eligibility is rather broad but the actual enforcement is somehow weak. In particular, the legal administration of UD in housing is not guaranteed and so, the complementary measure is required. The application direction of UD to the Korean housing was discussed through the case studies of UD in US. The basic accessibility features was found to be stressed most. The accessible work surfaces are found to be the second in the application of UD. The basic accessibility features includes ample clear floor space, lever hardware on doors, and so on. Through the general analyses, the kitchen are stressed most importantly. The bathrooms, entrance halls, bedrooms, laundry rooms, etc are treated significantly in the listed order.
