Synthesis of Some Bis(bipyridyl) Ligands Linked to Phenyl Groups

In order to investigate the utilization of photochemically and electrochemically active metal-bipyridyl complexes bridged with xylene group, some bis(bipyridyl)ligands are prepared. The ligand, o-bis(4'-methyl-(2,2'-bipyridyl))-4-ethyl)benzene (oxdbp), was synthesized from the reaction of the anion of 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl with o-α,α'-dibromoxylene. m-Derivative (mxdbp) and p-derivative (pxdbp) were also synthesized from m-α,α'dibromoxylene and p-α, α'-dibromoxylene, respectively.

The reaction of benzaldehyde with ethyl cyanoacetate was carried out in the presence of the mesoporous molecular sieve M-AIKIT-1 (where M = Na, K, Rb, Cs) for 10 min. Imine formation reactions were also carried out under the same conditions. Microwave-assisted mesoporous molecular sieve-catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation and imine formation are efficient reactions under these solvent-free conditions. This method is an easy, rapid, and high-yielding one for conducting base-catalyzed condensation reactions.
Radical Reactions of α-(ω'-Bromoalkanoyl)cycloketones

In order to develop the method with ω-bromoalkanoyl chloride. These radical precursors were treated with several radical reaction for construction of carbon skeleton of medium and large membered ring natural products, new radical ring expansion reaction was performed. For this study, various 1,3-diketone bearing ω-bromoalkyl chain was prepared from the corresponding ketone by acylation conditions. The results of this study were described.
Electrochemical Study of Some Bis(metal-trisbipyridyl) Complexes Bridged with Xylene Groups

It is known that metal-bipyridyl complexes shows photochemically and electrochemically interesting properties. In order to investigate the intramolecular metal-metal interaction between metal-ligand complexes which was connected with a spacer group. Some bis(metal-trisbipyridyl) complexes bridged with xylene groups were prepared. The electrochemistry of these complexes was studied. Osmium complexes showed a peak near + 1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl due to adsorption on glassy carbon electrode in CH_2Cl_2, whereas ruthenium complexes showed a peak at 1.3 V. The adsorption on electrode was observed by frequency response of EQCM. Also, Cyclic Voltammetry of Nafion coating incorporated with [(Os(bpy)_2)_2(oxdby)]^4+ showed reduction-reoxidation waves in H_2SO_4 solution.

The research of self-assembled monolayers offers unique opportunities to investigate the fundamental understanding of self-organization, structure-properties-relationships, and interfacial phenomena. The modification of both head and tail groups of the constituent molecules for self-assembled monolayers would be a suitable tool for an understanding of competition among intermolecular, molecule-substrates, and molecule-solvent interactions. In order to find the methods for the construction of dendrimer containing organic thin layers, the thiols bearing the phenol type functionality on the other side was prepared.

Lewis acid supported Nanopore Silica catalysts for microwave-assisted Biginelli reaction under solvent-free conditions were prepared by impregnating FeCl₃ dissolved in ethanol to Nanopore Silica at 40℃. Biginelli reaction under solvent-free conditions, one-pot three-component condensation of urea, benzaldehyde, and ethyl acetoacetate, catalyzed with porous material or Lewis acid supported porous material, such as MCM-41, SBA-15, VSB-5, Nanopore Silica, FeCl₃/MCM-41, FeCl₃/Nanopore Silica, CeCl₃/Nanopore Silica and InCl3/Nanopore Silica, was investigated. Our recent results of the microwave-assisted Biginell reaction of some benzaldehyde derivatives starting materials using MCM-41, Nanopore Silica, FeCl₃/Nanopore Silica, under solvent-free conditions are also reported. Aromatic aldehydes carrying either electron releasing or electron withdrawing substituents in the ortho, meta, and para positions afforded good yields of the products using MCM-41 as a catalyst. When Nanopore Silica was used as a catalyst, the yield of the Biginelli product was in the range of 2756%. However FeCl₃/Nanopore Silica has been employed as a catalyst, the yield of the Biginelli product was increased dramatically. Thus it has been found that the use of FeCl₃/Nanopore Silica as heterogeneous catalyst has made this method very cost effective.
