In the previous papers, it was reported that p-methoxycinnamate showed good antipyretic action when tested on the typhoid-vaccinated rabbits and decreased the ascorbic add content of the adrenals of rats like other wellknown antipyretics. In the present work, it was shown that p-methoxycinnamic acid exhibited marked analgesic properties. The method employed for testing analgesic effect was modification of that described by Woolfe and Macdonald. Of mice which had been trained and jumped out within 5 seconds on the hot plate of 59o, the reaction time was prolonged by subcutaneous injection of its sodium salt aqueous solution. Mean responses were proved to increase linearly with the log doses (from doses 160mg to 500mg/kg).

One hundred forty five Korean plants have been previously evaluated for their inhibitory and/or inductive efficacies on drug metabolizing enzyme activity. And it has been demonstrated that Angelica sp. exhibited the most potent activity. In this communication, the screening result on various on various parts of 9 different plants belonging the Angelica species collected in Korea are mentioned. The tests were performed by estimating the duration of hypnosis in accordance with the procedures described previously. Results: It was revealed that several plant parts showed significant prolongation and/or shortening of the duration of barbiturate-induced hypnosis.

Alkaloid Screening of Some Saudi Arabian Plants

The alkaloid fraction was separated from the methanol extract of 13 Saudi Arabian plants. The Rf values of the spots appeared on TLC (silicagel G) plates were calculated with each alkaloid fraction. The results are presented in this paper.
상륙씨의 성분 Americanin A의 입체구조와 그의 Acetonylidene 유도체에 관하여

Americanin A is a main lignan component of the seeds of Phytolacca americana(Phytolaccacae). Through the chemical transformation to (-)-silandrin, a well established flavanolignan from Sihybum marianum, the structure of americanin A was settled to be trans-2-(3`, 4`-dihydroxyphenyl)-3-hydroxymethyl-6-(3-oxo-prop-1-enyl-benz-1, 4-dioxane. A new compound, mp 242˚ isolated from mother liquor after separation of americanin A was elucidated as acetonylidene americanin A. This compound is, however, not a genuine con stituent but formed in the plant tissue on extracting with acetone.

Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) among several irritating spices tested was highly effective on the duration of hexobarbital hypnosis in mice. Pretreatment of mice with the methanolic extract of black pepper (60㎎/㎏ i.p.) prolonged markedly the duration of hexobarbital sleeping time. Three consecutive daily administrations of the same dose of black pepper extract, however, shortened (37%) the duration of hexobarbital sleeping time. The ether soluble fraction of black pepper extract caused most potent effects on the duration of hexobarbital hypnosis. From the above results, it was postulated that the lipid soluble components of black pepper might considerably change the drug action and metabolism by altering drug metabolizing enzyme systems.

The methanolic extracts of fifty medicinal plants were screened for anticholinergic and oxytocic activity in rat`s ileum or uterus. In addition, their effect on the ileum and antagonism against oxytocin in the uterus were tested.
