Electronic structure calculations have become a powerful foundation for computational materials engineering. Four major factors have enabled this unprecedented evolution, namely (i) the development of density functional theory (DFT), (ii) the creation of highly efficient computer programs to solve the Kohn-Sham equations, (iii) the integration of these programs into productivity-oriented computational environments, and (iv) the phenomenal increase of computing power. In this context, we describe recent applications of the Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP) within the MedeA$^{(R)}$ computational environment, which provides interoperability with a comprehensive range of modeling and simulation tools. The focus is on technological applications including microelectronic materials, Li-ion batteries, high-performance ceramics, silicon carbide, and Zr alloys for nuclear power generation. A discussion of current trends including high-throughput calculations concludes this article.
Regrets and Surprises: A Unifying Account of Japanese Noni

The Japanese particle noni leads a double existence as a concessive and a counterfactual particle. It is in the latter sense that Ogihara (2014) refers to noni as a ‘regret-marker’, one that conveys regret in view of a proposition’s falsity. In this paper, we unify the two uses, proposing an underspecified core semantics that covers both. While the analysis draws on previous work on concessive (more generally: contrastive) particles, it reveals a new strategy natural language use to convey counterfactuality. Our analysis is shown to also work for cases that do not seem to have been dealt with so far: ones in which noni conveys regret in view of the truth, rather than the falsity, of a proposition.

Reliability of onboard power supply systems on rolling stock is a very important issue for the railway operator. While a failure of the HVAC supply results in a loss of comfort for the passengers, a failure of the supply for air compressors or for the traction cooling systems results in towing the train. This is, looking at the required availability of a train, not acceptable. An active redundancy concept for the onboard power supply maximizes the availability of the system. This paper describes such a system under the aspect of $\cdot$ Weight reduction $\cdot$ Continuous operation when changing from normal to redundant operation $\cdot$ Flexibility in train design.

Static inverters are essential devices onboard of rolling stock. State-of-the-art static inverters have an impact on both rail infrastructure and vehicle maintenance due to their new topology with new features. The paper describes two important aspects as examples of new features available in state-of-the-art static inverters: active input current control and the effects on the rail infrastructure as well as the detection of the state of charge and the state of health of batteries to simplify vehicle maintenance.
