Evaluation of antifilarial activity of Berberis aristata roots

        Waseem Rizvi,NakhatHaider,Anil Kumar,Razi Ahmad,Mohammad Shahid,Anwar Shazad 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2008 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.8 No.2

The effect of aqueous and alcoholic extract of roots of Berberis aristata was studied on the spontaneous movements of the whole worm (w.w) preparation and nerve muscle (n.m) complex of cattle filarial parasite Setaria cervi and on the survival of microfilariae. Only aqueous extract could inhibit the spontaneous movements of S. cervi, characterized by initial stimulation followed by reversible paralysis. The concentration required to produce similar effect on n.m complex was less as compared to the w.w. The lethal concentration 50 and lethal concentration 90 for aqueous extract were 48 ng/ml and 65 ng/ml. Synergistic Effect of STS and Cool Storage on Postharvest Performance of Cut Spikes of Consolida ajacis cv. Violet Blue

Waseem Shahri,Inayatullah Tahir,Sheikh Tajamul Islam,Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat 한국원예학회 2011 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.52 No.5

Cut spikes of Consolida ajacis cv. Violet Blue were used for the study. The ethylene antagonist (STS) was used in combination with cool storage for 72 h at 5℃ to assess the synergistic effect of both chemical and temperature treatment on postharvest performance of cut spikes. The spikes were divided into three sets, one set was pretreated with STS (1 h Pulse) prior to wet storage at 5℃ for 72 h, while the other set was pretreated after 72 h cool wet storage. The third set of spikes was cool stored (at 5℃) for 72 h but kept unpulsed, which represented control. After 72 h storage, the spikes from all the three sets were transferred to flasks containing distilled water (DW) or 0.2 M sucrose + 100 mg・L-1 8-HQS (SUC + HQS). Pretreatment of spikes with STS before or after wet storage resulted in an improved postharvest performance as compared to the controls. Maximum vase life of about 18 days was shown by spikes pretreated with STS prior to storage and transferred to SUC + HQS as compared to controls which registered a vase life of 10 days in DW and 13 days in SUC + HQS (0.2 M sucrose + 100 mg・L-1 8-HQS). Flower diameter, fresh and dry mass was markedly increased in the samples from spikes transferred to SUC + HQS. Correlation between soluble protein content in sepals and vase life was positive. The results show that soluble protein content in sepals is an important factor in determining the vase life of cut spikes of Consolida ajacis cv. Violet Blue. The study recommends that pulsing the spikes with 0.5 mM STS prior to 72 h wet storage at 5℃ and transferring them to holding solution containing SUC + HQS, can be used as a storage/chemical treatment to improve the postharvest performance of this cut flower.

      • COMPUTATIONAL STUDY OF DIFFERENT FACTORS IN NOx FORMATION

        Waseem Amjad,Muhammad Imtiaz,In-Gweon Lim(임인권) 한국연소학회 2008 KOSCOSYMPOSIUM논문집 Vol.- No.-

NOx formation during the combustion process occurs mainly through the oxidation of nitrogen in the combustion air (thermal NOx) and through oxidation of nitrogen with the fuel (prompt NOx). In this paper a numerical simulation is carried out to investigate one of the way to reduce the thermal NOx by the increase of the flame lift-off length for the lowering of peak flame temperature which is considered the main cause of thermal NOx. The flame lift-off length was analyzed by temperature contours and this length was found to be influenced by several factors such as fuel injection velocity, gas pressure, air temperature and fuel type. Different orifice diameters (1.0, 0.85, 0.65 ㎜) in an injection nozzle were used for this purpose using CFD software "FLUENT". The fuel injection velocities were 150, 100, 80 and 50 m/sec. It was observed that the NOx formation was reduced as the flame lift-off length increases with increased injection pressure, decreased orifice diameter, decreased gas pressure (back pressure).

Female body, femininity and authority in Bollywood: The “new” woman in Dangal and Queen

        Waseem Ahad,Selma Koç Akgül 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2020 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.26 No.1

Bollywood’s departure from its earlier constructions of women as sex objects, victims of male violence, dependent, obedient and peripheral, is partly due to global/transnational cultural and economic flows that have influence in Indian society. What needs to be charted out is how patriarchal anxieties continue to emerge in recent Bollywood movies where women otherwise appear to assume assertive screen presence and play dominant roles. This study seeks to disentangle notions of “national” and “local,” in particular, because the former does not explain India’s family or local community settings that exercise substantial control over women. Through an analysis of two films, Dangal (2016) and Queen (2014), this study shows how present-day Bollywood appropriates opposing ideals of Hinduism and liberal ideology; therefore, the stories remain rooted in contemporary social discourse. It will be seen that the somewhat masculine woman in Dangal, who is divested of erotic and reproductive attributes, bears the double-burden of subordination by a family patriarch and becoming a national symbol. Through its scrutiny of Queen, the study also demonstrates how a new Indian femininity, “assertive” and “confident,” is mediated by the dominant male cultural gaze. The films offer useful models for comparison of varying forms of femininities.

      • Invitro antifilarial potential of the leaf extract of Oscimum sanctum on cattle filarial parasite Setaria cervi

Waseem, Rizvi,K.C., Singhal,Nakhat, Haider,Anil, Kumar Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Research Center 2004 Oriental pharmacy and experimental medicine Vol.4 No.1

The effect of aqueous and alcoholic extract of the leaves of Ocimum. sanctum was studied on the spontaneous movements of the whole worm (w.w) preparation and nerve muscle (n.m.) complex of Setaria cervi (S. cervi) and on the survival of microfilariae (m.f.) in vitro. Both the extracts caused inhibition of the spontaneous motility of the w.w. and n.m. complex of S. cervi characterized by initial stimulation followed by reversible paralysis, aqueous extract at a higher concentration showed immediate effect and irreversible paralysis. The concentration required to inhibit the movements of n.m. complex was $1/4^{th}$ for aqueous and $1/3^{rd}$ for alcoholic extract compared to that for the w.w., suggesting a cuticular permeability barrier. On the m.f. the lethal concentration (LC 50 and LC 90) were 35 and 50 ng/ml for aqueous whereas, 60 and 85 ng/ml for alcoholic extracts respectively.

Optimization of hexavalent chromium removal from aqueous solution using acid-modified granular activated carbon as adsorbent through response surface methodology

Waseem Daoud,Taghi Ebadi,Ahmad Fahimifar 한국화학공학회 2015 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.32 No.6

Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to evaluate the effect of the main operational variables, including initial pH, initial chromium ion concentration, bulk density of GAC and time on the removal of hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) from contaminated groundwater by permeable reactive barriers (PRB) with acid-modified granular activated carbon (GAC) as an adsorbent material. The removal rates of Cr(VI) under different values of these parameters were investigated and results indicated high adsorption capacity at low pH and low initial metal ion concentration of Cr(VI), but the bulk density of GAC slightly influenced the process efficiency. According to the ANOVA (analysis of variance) results, the model presents high R2 values of 94.35% for Cr(VI) removal efficiency, which indicates that the accuracy of the polynomial models was good. Also, quadratic regression models with estimated coefficients were developed to describe the pollutant removals.

A Note on $(p,q)$-analogue Type of Frobenius-Genocchi Numbers and Polynomials

        Waseem A. Khan,Idrees A. Khan 영남수학회 2020 East Asian mathematical journal Vol.36 No.1

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce Apostol type (p, q)-Frobenius-Genocchi numbers and polynomials of order α and inves- tigate some basic identities and properties for these polynomials and num- bers including addition theorems, difference equations, derivative proper- ties, recurrence relations. We also obtain integral representations, im- plicit and explicit formulas and relations for these polynomials and num- bers. Furthermore, we consider some relationships for Apostol type (p, q)- Frobenius-Genocchi polynomials of order α associated with (p, q)-Apostol Bernoulli polynomials, (p, q)-Apostol Euler polynomials and (p, q)-Apostol Genocchi polynomials.
